Product Description

Product Description

Faustino Ballvé's Essentials of Economics is a modern classic. It covers nearly the whole field of economics — from the meaning of economics to the market, from money and credit to socialism — and is short enough to read in a day.

Ballvé was a remarkable thinker and economist, educated in Spain and England and later a teacher and practitioner of law in Mexico City. It was in Mexico that he first heard Ludwig von Mises lecture. These talks sparked a new intellectual energy in him, and through a long correspondence with Mises they became good friends.

The result of his studies and correspondence was this splendid book. He combines history, theory, and clear exposition to present what might be called an orthodox Austrian view of the way the world works. In its elegant simplicity and refreshing accessibility, it is the perfect text to educate the intelligent laymen in economic theory.

As Felix Morley writes in his introduction, "Something of the warmth and cheerfulness of the author's personality comes through, to make the reader feel that his is listening to the conversation of an old and cherished friend."

5.0 out of 5 stars Phenomenal introductory Economics text 8 Sep 2009

Alongside "Economics in One Lesson" by Hazlitt and "Economics for Real People" by Callahan, I would say this is one of the very best introductory economic texts out there. It is concise, yet more than adequately elucidates on concepts that require more explanation. I highly recommend it to anyone interested in learning the basics of economics in a very straightforward and easy to read manner.

This book is easy to understand while teaching the basic process of economic behavior. This book would help the transition from total ignorance to a useful application of ecconomic understanding.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good Introduction 29 Oct 2011
By Erez Davidi - Published on Amazon.com

As was pointed out by other reviews, Essentials of Economics (along with Economics in One Lesson) is one of the clearest and most readable introductions to free market economics. The author covers a vast array of different topics that are necessary in order to have a basic understanding of economics, such as: the role of the entrepreneur in the economy, the role of money and credit in society, international trade and more. For people who are completely new to economics, I would recommend first reading How an Economy Grows and Why It Crashes by Peter Schiff and Economics in One Lesson: The Shortest and Surest Way to Understand Basic Economics by Hazlitt which are easier to understand.

4.0 out of 5 stars A great primer to capitalism and economics 4 Jan 2011
By Robert Kirk - Published on Amazon.com
I read this book because it was on the recommended list of Tom Woods. Woods was the author of "Meltdown" and I thought that was one of the best economic books I've read in some time. Essentials of Economics is just that, some of the basic ideas of our capitalistic economic system. I loved the simplicity of the basic economic ideas and with it's Austrian school of economic slant, it really resonated with me. It's a very short guide to the basics but it's efficent and laser like focused on steering the reader to Austrian science.
