This textbook presents introductory ecology in an accessible, state–of–the–art format designed to cultivate the novice student′s understanding of, and fascination with, the natural world. In a concise, engaging style, this text outlines the essential principles of ecology from the theoretical fundamentals to their practical applications. • History boxes outlining key landmarks in the development of ecology
  • Quantitative boxes – allowing mathematical aspects of ecology to be explained clearly without interrupting the flow of the text
  • Topical ECOncerns boxes – highlighting ethical, social and political questions in ecology
  • Review questions – included at the end of each chapter

Disappointing 23 Oct 2006
Format:Paperback
If you need an ecology book and you want Begon Harper and Townsend then get the new edition Ecology:From individuals to Ecosystems

It costs more or less the same and has 100 times the depth of information.

I'm annoyed that i paid good money for a not-so-good book

This book is a good background for ecology. All essential points and termanology is clearly given, making this book easier to revise from. However, there is not enough use of colour (or at least any colour apart from purple) to break the text, making it a more daunting read. Graphs and diagrams are clear, though dull in purple monohrome.

Overall, 'Essentials of Ecology' is good as a textbook, but not for enjoyment.

basic knowledge only 14 Sep 2010
Format:Paperback
For the undergraduate new to ecology this is a great book to get you versed in fundemental principles, statements and terms. However for those looking to achieve a first this book simply does not go into enough detail, the diagrams are not thouroughly explained, there is no pointers/links/website etc. mentioned at key points or studies to springboard to further reading and knowledge.

I was recommended this as an undergraduate 2nd year core textbook, and that is what it is a CORE text for a firm foundation in basic ecology. To get the most out of this book, an individual must be motivated enough to put post-it's through the book at interesting points and research them yourself elsewhere.

For me diagrams are simple explanations of text, you must only glance on them to understand them (like a school textbook). I found little thought-provoking studies given. There is also not enough bold colours or other methods to attract readers. This is neither a good revision book or for light reading.

I would also say that on some accounts some points are labored on to death when I understood in the first 2 sentences, whereas some of the more complex maths involved i.e. the Lotka_volterra equations etc. for one who did not study Alevel maths would have been confusing and more background knowledge needed to be supplied.

However I would say that the way it is laid out is good i.e. the sections and chapters as well as good 'key points' in the margins if your in a hurry.

In short probably better getting either a shorter, easier to read book OR a larger textbook with more depth, this is a kind of hybrid which doesn't really work terribly well.
