Review

I like the book very much, Well structured around organ system that makes it easy to learn about a specific problem for example around a patient. (Anders Fasth, University of Gothenburg)

From the Back Cover

Essentials of Clinical Immunology provides the most up–to–date, core information required to understand diseases with an immunological basis. Clinically focussed, the sixth edition of this classic text presents theoretical and practical information in a simple yet thorough way.

Essentials of Clinical Immunology

Perfect for clinical medical students, junior doctors and medical professionals seeking a refresher in the role of immunology in clinical medicine, this comprehensive text features fully updated clinical information, boxes with key points, real–life case histories to illustrate key concepts and an index of contents at the start of each chapter.

A companion website at www.immunologyclinic.com provides additional learning tools, including more case studies, interactive multiple–choice questions and answers, all of the photographs and illustrations from the book, links to useful websites, and a selection of review articles from the journal Clinical and Experimental Immunology.

I was sent a copy of essentials of clinical immunology to review this title and consider it's appropriateness for a medical student audience. I have found that this title is a highly detailed text on immunology.

The advantages are that there are useful diagrams within the title to use in enabling your understanding of immunology and how it applies to each of the specific organ systems. The title also includes summaries of the clinical considerations at the start of most chapters which are good as a kind of chapter overview.

The disadvantage of this title I found was that it was more detailed than a student would be expected to know in clinical practice. The detail perhaps is useful if you are learning about these for the first time in a PBL based process but there are other titles such as Muir's and/or Underwood's Pathology titles which contain this detail along with anatomy of the organs involved.

In conclusion this could be a useful title for use by medical students but I would encourage you to firstly get it out of your university library if it is available there in order to assess whether it is in a style useful to yourself.

Good Continued Reference for ICU/Anesthesia Nurse 15 May 2014
By Mrs. Night Owl - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback Vine Customer Review of Free Product ( What's this? )
First of all, I'm a bit of a nerd. I've worked in high acuity ICUs and also in prep for anesthesia school. Often times immunology isn't a well-covered subject, but this book does a great job filling the gap.
The information is scientific and clinical enough to be relevant to a person practicing in a hospital, but it's not so crazy as a true medical text might be (where things are broken down to chemical composition and reactions). I did find myself reading about situations I tend to run across (anaphylaxis, for example) wishing they were a tad more in-depth. That's OK though - this book gives a good starting point and/or refresher of the big picture.

One of the key strengths of the book is how it's organized by body region or type of immunity issue. This makes a clear cut boundary when looking for specific issues
For someone practicing in a surgical ICU, the section on transplants is a bit weak. That's the only area I found disappointing in the whole book... perhaps because I'm already knowledgeable in that regard. I would've liked to see that expanded though.

Overall, this is a solid text for someone who needs some extra help understanding immunology with a clinical focus. It's not going to be your reference/bible, but it will certainly provide a good understanding. I guess that goes with the territory of a book entitled "Essentials of..."

Recommend.
A nice primer on Immunology, at a fairly high level. 15 May 2014

Maybe "primer" isn't the right word. This book is appropriate for those in medical school, or practicing as physicians. It's also nice for someone like me: pursuing a PhD in Biology, and interested in filling in the gaps in my knowledge regarding physiology and associated subjects. It's full of technical terms though, so if you haven't had some basic foundational courses or reading recently, it might be a bit overwhelming. That said, the illustrations are good, the text is readable (if presented at a somewhat advanced level), and the book is up to date on the diagnosis and treatment of immunological dysfunction. For being published by Wiley, the book isn't nearly as horribly expensive as some of their other texts.

That said, if cost is still an issue, the 5th edition (2006) is often available a bit more inexpensively and is quite similar: Essentials of Clinical Immunology

Thieme also has a similar text, their Color Atlas of Immunology (Thieme Flexibook), that is also nice, if a bit smaller and perhaps more dated. It's quite reasonably priced used though, if you just want a book for the fundamentals.

Anyway, while this is not a full-on textbook like Clinical Immunology: Principles and Practice, it is an excellent, up-to-date book, and likely contains enough information on immunology for most medical practitioners.
Great resource, just enough detail 13 April 2014

I have found this book to be a great resource for reviewing immunology, as well as learning more about some of the diseases my patients have. The book starts with a basic refresher of the "actors" in immunology (recognition molecules, effector molecules, neutrophils, macrophages, T and B cells, etc.). Then it moves on to infection, immunodeficiency, anaphylaxis and allergy, and autoimmunity, all with brief case studies and great, clear illustrations. There are chapters on lymphoproliferative disorders, kidney diseases, skin diseases, joints and muscles, and lots more -- even a chapter on immunological diseases in pregnancy.

I find the writing very clear, with just enough detail to explain difficult concepts without becoming mired in excruciating detail. I really liked the chapter on autoimmunity, as I see so many patients with autoimmune diseases. The chapter asks, what prevents autoimmunity? And then goes on to ask (and answer), how does tolerance break down? What triggers autoimmunity, and how does tissue get damaged by autoimmune processes. It ends with treatment of autoimmune disease.

One note for American audiences is that the authors are from British hospitals, so some variation from American treatments/approaches can be expected, but I found this to be a very minor issue.
OMGoodness This is a very good primer! 13 Jun. 2014

I primarily requested this book because it's been over 20 years since nursing school, and I was really fuzzy on my Immunology facts! So when the opportunity arose to get the Essentials of Clinical Immunology I jumped on it! I was hoping for a more detailed picture of diabetes mellitus and was a little disappointed because the coverage was pretty brief, but when there's so much to cover, I really couldn't expect each and every topic to be covered in the greatest of detail!
Our teenage son's girlfriend has type 1 diabetes, and I wanted to make sure I was completely up to date on the subject. She's not a stable diabetic - so I wanted a refresher on the subject. If this is what is needed, it's better to go through the American Diabetes Assn.
This book is a great resource for students in med school, nursing school, or those who have Immunological illness. It's not a difficult text to read, and if chock full of pictures and diagrams. The bonus Wiley E-Text makes it very much well worth the cost!

This clinical immunology book provides the latest and the most current information needed to help the reader comprehend the various immune-induced pathologies and their probable underlying causes. This text is comprehensive and covers the signs and symptoms of immunological illnesses. Moreover, it illustrates key points and concepts with real-life case histories. It makes an interesting reading for anyone who is interested in clinical immunology and autoimmune diseases. The writing style is clear and concise, which makes it easier to read. The online links provided with the book are also helpful and can make nice practice exams for medical students. This volume will make a terrific reference book for practitioners and students alike.
