Ever since the first Essential R&B CD was released, with the Summer 2004 collection I have got all 5 Essential R&B CD's. While they are all good, this one, perhaps save for the Spring 2005 collection, has got to be the worst one so far. The first one, was the best, and the second one (winter 2004) was the second best.

When I saw the first saw the Summer 2004 edition, I bought as it looked a good mixture of old and new, with rap songs and r&b songs being mixed together well. It remains as one of the greatest compilations ever. I then bought the Winter 2004 edition, and while it was inferior to the Summer one, it was still a very good complation.

The quality of them has declined, and although the Summer 2005 one was still good, this Winter 2005 was mediocre. They do have some good songs which have been recently released, including Here I Go Again, Ghetto Gospel, So Seductive, Dreams and Let Me Hold You, as well as older songs like Can I Kick It, Doin' It, Wishing On A Star, No Diggity and Girls Ain't Nothin But Trouble. But then there are some weak fillers on there, including Ordinary People, Rock Star, 9 to 5, Scandalous and Don't Phunk With My Heart, which I think are all awful songs and bring down the quality of the compilation. There are more, but I can't be bothered to name them all.

Another thing is that whoever chooses the playlists for the CD does seem to lack imagination. This is the fifth compilation of the series, and in the 40 songs on this one there are at least 10 songs that have been on at least one of the 4 previous ones. This was also apparent on the summer 2005 one. I mean, who wants those bloody annoying F**k it and F.U.R.B. songs on it they have got to be contenders for the worst R&B songs ever. And in both cases, they have been on at least one of the previuos 4 compilations, and are amongst the fillers. Then theres the Blu Cantrell song, which is on for the third time, and thats hardly a good song. Then u have Outkast and Jay-Z, who have released many good songs over the years, but yet Roses and Wishing On A Star have been on previous ones. They could have had Ms Jackson and Girls, Girls, Girls, which haven't been on an Essential R&B CD and are two of the best rap songs going. Similarly with DJ Jazzy jeff and the Fresh prince, they could have had Boom! Shake The Room.

My other grumble, is the amount of explicit versions of songs on the compilations. I think on this one there is a grand total of 3. (Poppin' Them Thangs, Dreams and So Seductive). There are at least 10 songs on there which have swearing on, but we only get the clean version. I'm not saying swearing is a good thing in songs, its just better than having to have words blanked out. If they have some explicit versions of songs, they may as well have all of them, with no clean versions of explicit songs. In the other ones there would be at least 10 explicit versions of explicit songs.

So, when the 6th edition comes out, supposedly Spring 2006 in March time, my message to the person who chooses the songs to go on, would be, put more hip-hop classics on, don't put songs which have already been on previous compilations, and have all the explicit versions of songs and no clean versions.

Received this product and was surprised to see that the CD was all scratched and the insert looked as if it had been dropped in water then dried on the radiator. As you can imagine I was not happy with the goods so I returned it.

I pleased a new order and I am still waiting for it so far I've been waiting for 1 month, so watch this space.

As a huge fan & collector of good quality of R&B/Soul/Funk music,I have lately been very disappointed of the various compilatios of the so called R&B genre. In most of the different 2 cd compilations that came out during the past five years or so(in various labels as well...),there was a wrong policy of including in these sets songs that are not NEW at all ! why do we have to have on a "latest" R&B collection tracks from 4 7 or even 10 years ago, that we probably already have in other different cd collections???...and you all know what I mean !...Besides, those latest "R&B" compilatios, have lately become more Hip Hop/Rap/Dancehall compilations ! Where is THE REAL GOOD quality R&B stuff? As most of these compilations are made in England, why not include more british R&B/soul artists (or as I call it: R & Brits...)- there is always GREAT music in the british R&B scene... So unfortunately, I have to give a 3 stars rate to this collection, hoping that in the next ones, we will have ONLY NEW material, and MORE REAL R&B tracks !
