Review

'Marjorie Lloyd and Peggy Murphy address the skills needed before embarking on health and social care studies. They emphasise the need for vocational study skills to include learning from the workplace and to examine the skills needed to 'fly solo'. There is a comprehensive list of useful websites. General study skills are not neglected. There is an emphasis on the neglected topic of preparation - the value of planning before you put pen to paper. There is also a straightforward explanation of referencing that looks not only at its mechanics but, unusually and helpfully, at its purpose. The chapter on critical thinking is excellent - describing it as a 'willingness to examine information from as many sides as possible', and also describing what it is not. Using authors from a wider range of institutions for the book could have added other viewpoints. That said, there is much to recommend this book, and students and lecturers in health studies will find it a useful resource. --Nursing Standard, 22 July 2009, Vol 23 no 46

This is a very accessible toolkit for those who have not done any recent learning, which is a feature of the students taking the Foundation Degree. A good introduction to basic skills, such as note taking, and more developed skills like essay constructions. The chapter on searching for internet sources is one that does not appear in many study skills texts and is relevant for today s students. --Lecturer, Liverpool John Moores University

Very suitable for undergraduate students. Easy to read. Successfully integrates basic theoretical principles with practical tips and ideas. Overall very readable and very good. --Lecturer, Manchester Metropolitan University
