This only gets 1 star because there isn't a 'no stars' option. This desecration is a re-re-re-re-re-re-re-re-release (or re-re etc re-hash) of some mostly brilliant and occasionally so-so tracks by The Stranglers. Who decided this was 'essential'? Essential to whom? Not a single new track at all, many 're-mastered' tracks that aren't as good as the originals, and a track listing decided it seems by pulling titles out of a hat.
Want something 'essential' by The Stranglers? Go to their first few albums from Rattus to Raven, parts of The Gospel According To The Meninblack even. There have been highs & lows since - Coup de Grace was dismal but their last 2 releases (Norfolk Coast & Suite XVI) show a return to form of sorts. There are much better compilations out there - the early ones are better than those more recent.
So who would buy this cheap, nasty & rip-off package? As someone who is rather obsessive as far as The Stranglers is concerned and a bit of a completist, I will NOT buy it. EVER. I urge everyone to follow suit.

EMI have recently seen fit to release what they call their 'Essential' series of albums which includes Gary Moore, Blondie and Iggy Pop to name but a few.
In each and every case, they have randomly thrown together a selection of tracks without a great deal of thought or planning. The packaging is also very uninspired.
This collection, whilst containing some great material (no Stranglers fan could argue with that), is a hopeless repackaging of songs that have already been packaged and repackaged to death over the last thirty years.
There are immensely superior collections out there which offer so much more.
