Product Description

Review

"...It is rare that texts are found combining ease of understanding with a solid scientific foundation. The subtitle of this text ′a clear and concise introduction to soil science′ does indeed sum up this book. Its clarity of production and focus on key aspects of science and human interaction make it a great guide for the beginner and a ′must–buy′ for the library." British Ecological Society, Teaching Ecology Group Newsletter <!––end––>

"I can wholeheartedly recommend this book to students whose course includes a module of soil science, and indeed recommend it to students on soil science degrees as a general introduction or a last minute revision guide." John S. Conway, Royal Agricultural College, Cirencester

Product Description

This textbook is aimed at the majority of students, who need to quickly acquire a concise overview of soil science. Many current soil science textbooks still cater for a traditional student market where students embark on three years study in a narrow discipline. The growth in modular degree schemes has meant that soil science is now often taught as self–standing unit as part of broad based degree program. Students pursuing this type of course are increasingly reluctant to purchase expensive textbooks that are too detailed and often assume a scientific background. For those opting to specialise in soil science there are a variety of good textbooks to choose from. This short informative guide, will be particularly useful for students who do not possess a traditional scientific background, such as those studying geography, environment science, ecology and agriculture.

  • Only textbook to cater for introductory courses in soil science.
  • Provides an affordable concise overview of soil science.
  • Learning exercises and chapter summaries enhance usability.
  • Annotated suggestions for further reading.
  • Based on proven and successful modular course structure.
  • Emphasis on readability and interactive learning.
  • No scientific background assumed.

Clearly written, aimed at any student of soil science - including those without a chemistry background.

Well organised into seven chapters covering topics such as soil formation, soil content, classification and soil's relationship with man.

The further reading section, including a list of web links, is particularly useful for those inspired to research further.

I have six, (that's right) six soil science books on my bookshelf and this one more than any other got me through the basics of soil science for my degree. While I acknowledge that there are more detailed and in depth books on the market, this one deals with basic concepts in such a clear and concise way that I would have no hesitation in recommending this book to any undergraduate undertaking soil science either as a degree or as a module for an environmental science/ countryside management qualification.

I have to disagree with Jam's review. I found the book invaluable to my undergraduate study at Birmingham University and wouldn't have any problem recommending it to other readers. It is always a careful balancing act for an author to write an entry level book which is both accessible to the reader but also at the same time detailed enough to deal with the underlying scientific issues. I think Ashman and Puri have done a first rate job at getting this balance right. However, this book should be seen as the starting point for anyone interested in starting their studies into soil science rather than a detailed scientific study of the subject. As an entry level book I would have no problem recommending it as a very good starting point for any fellow student.
