Don't Leave Home(in Britain) without this book...
on 1 January 2014
I have been banging on about France and the French and their funny little ways in book and article form for three decades or more. While thinking about doing yet another book about buying a home in France and living with the enemy, I looked at what other writers were doing on the subject. For me, this bloke has absolutely nailed it. Not only is the book a cornucopia of fact, information, data and solid advice, but he writes so well and engagingly. Moreover, he is fearlessly honest in his observations about some of the vagaries and not-so-wonderful aspects of the French and their culture and how they can view us interlopers. I find so many snobbily pretentious francofanatic chattering-class writers slavishly follow party lines in agreeing with the French that every aspect of their country and culture is beyond criticism. That is a load of merde, as anyone with Mark Sampson's experience and powers of observation and levels of honestly will tell you. In my humble opinion- and I really do know what I am talking about unlike a lot of dunderheads who leave crits on Amazon- this is an absolutely essential book for anyone even thinking about thinking about buying a place in or moving to France.
