If you are teaching or learning to teach primary science, this is the toolkit to support you! Not only does it cover the essential knowledge and understanding that you need to know, it also offers over 200 great ideas for teaching primary science - so no more late nights thinking up creative new ways to teach key concepts!

In addition, this book offers you practical guiding principles which you can apply to every lesson. There are tips on how to ensure each lesson includes both practical and investigative elements and suggestions on how to make your lessons engaging, memorable and inclusive.

Each chapter is organized around the following structure:

  • What science do you need to know and understand?
  • What science do your pupils need to learn?
  • What is the best way to teach these topics in the primary classroom at KS1 and KS2?
Sample pupil activities are also included and there is coverage of how to deal with common misconceptions within every chapter.

Written in a friendly style, the authors draw on their own teaching experience and understanding of the National Curriculum and QTS standards to provide an essential guide to teaching primary science.

For those of you familiar with Adrian Bowden's Travelling Science Shows, you will understand what Adrian is all about. He brings Science to life through exciting demonstrations, involving children, using correct vocabulary and, most importantly, appealing to all learning types.

The book really is more of the same - giving a good overview of Science for those without the depth of subject knowledge, whilst offering a range of practical, investigative ways of teaching.

What also is very helpful is the section on tackling misconceptions - sometimes a child has a very 'logical' misconception about Science and this book equips teachers with the tools needed to 'unteach' these areas.

Every Primary School should have this book.

An excellent reference book. Clear information to make sure your subject knowledge is up to date, good ideas for investigations, plus web-links. I'd definitely recommend this book (and already have done to colleagues!)

I am scheduled to begin a Primary PGCE this year and have decided to learn/revise everything from scratch! Having done my GCSEs in 2005, Science is no alien subject to me, but some of the key concepts have understandably become a little rusty over time!

I bought "Essential Primary Science" as my primary (pardon the pun) science textbook, and am very glad that I did! The book contains a wealth of information on every scientific topic required at KS1 and KS2, as well as a copy of all the DfEE/QCA guidelines for what exactly is required from the science curriculum.

What sets this book apart from similar titles, however, is the inclusion of over 200 inspiring classroom activities - an invaluable helping hand for the busy class teacher, no doubt, and would be quite worthy of a book in their own right. Many activities are cross-curricular and links to other subjects or science topics are clearly labelled in the margin. "Common misconception" boxes throughout reveal some of the most interesting, incorrect observations that children make, as well as a clear explanation of the truth behind the mistake! These make for both interesting and useful reading.

In conclusion, "Essential Primary Science" would be a valuable resource in any trainee or qualified teacher's arsenal. The information is concise and presented in an interesting and compelling way; the suggested activities are informed and inspiring (and, I imagine, incredible time-savers!) and the authors are backed by experience, so they know what they are talking about!

Very highly recommended! :)
