I quite like this grammar. It is very clear on the basics of Portuguese grammar. You get the feeling that it was written by someone who knows the language in depth and can extract what is essential but still give full information. The reference system makes different points easy to get to, when you use the book as a reference tool. You can also use it as a course book, though there are no exercises for practice. Perhaps it would be asking for too much in a book of this size. The information on verbs is also clear and fine but in my case I needed more. I have found a superb book on Portuguese verbs, another five star book. It is called 'Portuguese Verbs Explained An Essential Guide' and the author is Manuela Cook. If you want more than the Prista book has to say on verbs, I strongly recommend this one. Like Prista, this is an author who knows her Portuguese (and her English too)!

For intermediate students or anyone following a course in Portuguese, this book is fantastic. I've been having trouble finding a good grammar book for Portuguese, as my required course book explains all the grammar in Portuguese, making it difficult to thoroughly understand everything.
This book is detailed but not difficult to understand, with clear examples, instructions and parallels in English. It doesn't look very glamorous but I found it incredibly useful. The standard of grammar included ranges from simple things like articles and plurals to things which I have found impossible to pick up from the aforementioned Portuguese grammar book, like the subjunctive and the personal infinitive.
There has not been anything that I have needed which has been excluded from this book, including irregular verbs, summaries of every tense and voice that I have had to learn, and even a bit of idiomatic vocabulary.
It's not the only thing you need to learn Portuguese, but it's by far the best grammar book I've found. Great value for money.

This is the best portuguese grammar book I have come across out of my vast collection of portuguese study materials. The author simplifies the distinction between the use of various tenses, demonstratives, articles and other aspects of grammar usage through narratives and examples. This book has been absolutely essential to my learning. My fiance's family have commented that I articulate better than their relatives in Portugal. With the help of this book, I am able to write letters overseas. My fiances' family overseas are very impressed especially since I am not portuguese. I highly recommend this book. The overall format, content and strucuture is better than any language textbook I have come across.

I've only had this book 3 days but feel as though I've learned so much more already. It presents grammar facts clearly and concisely, with good explanations and examples of use. It's full of tips and essential information: like did you know that in English the word 'that' is often omitted (e.g. "I think * she is pretty") but you can't do this in Portuguese (you have to put in 'que'). It also has a Glossary of Grammatical Terms at the end which explains grammar jargon like 'conjugation' and what tenses are etc. I think this is the book which has helped me to develop my Portuguese skills the most. No-nonsense, straight to the facts. Excellent!

I've had this book now for 3 years. At first, I could only read a few sections as I begun to learn the basics in a begginer's class. As I progressed in Portuguese I found this book to be more and more valuable. It has helped me understand the most complicated niggling & annoying questions I've had about Portuguese sentence structures, and at the right times it seems. I would recommend it as along term companion rather than an instance fix as it is one of those useful books that you can't be without if you're going to invest long term in this language.

Although a beginner in Portuguese, this book has broadened my understanding of the grammer of the language considerably thereby letting me find order in the overwhelming amount of information I'm trying to assimilate.

Every possible nuance of the language is covered (both European and Brazilian) and it's entirely up to the reader how deep (s)he wants to dive in. I personally drew the line at Preterite Subjunctive and decided that the present tense, preterite and future would be enough to get me by - but it's all there if you want to. It's probably up to GCSE level and beyond.

There's a very useful list of regular/irregular verbs at the back which everybody studying Portuguese will have to tackle sooner or later and this is nicely laid out.

Especially useful is the English literal translation of some phrases together with what an English speaking person would actually say, in order that the Portugues can be made sense of.

Well worth it if you remotely serious about studying Portuguese.

I have just purchased the grammer and 501 verbs books as a combination and i can honestly say they are both really useful.
The grammer book explains in simple terms the basic concepts of portuguese grammer. It has made some sections of my portuguese work so much clearer and it has finally clicked what my lecturer was trying to say! The 501 verbs book is so useful and really clearly laid out in alphabetical order with all the verb tenses, its really handy when writing essays!
Overall I am really pleased with my purchase and would recomend any of them to anyone who is thinking about or studying Portuguese.
