5.0 out of 5 stars Great for essentials of grammar 13 April 2005
Format:Paperback
I quite like this grammar. It is very clear on the basics of Portuguese grammar. You get the feeling that it was written by someone who knows the language in depth and can extract what is essential but still give full information. The reference system makes different points easy to get to, when you use the book as a reference tool. You can also use it as a course book, though there are no exercises for practice. Perhaps it would be asking for too much in a book of this size. The information on verbs is also clear and fine but in my case I needed more. I have found a superb book on Portuguese verbs, another five star book. It is called 'Portuguese Verbs Explained An Essential Guide' and the author is Manuela Cook. If you want more than the Prista book has to say on verbs, I strongly recommend this one. Like Prista, this is an author who knows her Portuguese (and her English too)!

5.0 out of 5 stars the book to get if you're studying Portuguese 28 Dec 2004
By Ally
Format:Paperback
For intermediate students or anyone following a course in Portuguese, this book is fantastic. I've been having trouble finding a good grammar book for Portuguese, as my required course book explains all the grammar in Portuguese, making it difficult to thoroughly understand everything.

This book is detailed but not difficult to understand, with clear examples, instructions and parallels in English. It doesn't look very glamorous but I found it incredibly useful. The standard of grammar included ranges from simple things like articles and plurals to things which I have found impossible to pick up from the aforementioned Portuguese grammar book, like the subjunctive and the personal infinitive.

There has not been anything that I have needed which has been excluded from this book, including irregular verbs, summaries of every tense and voice that I have had to learn, and even a bit of idiomatic vocabulary.

It's not the only thing you need to learn Portuguese, but it's by far the best grammar book I've found. Great value for money.

5.0 out of 5 stars Highly recommended 30 July 1999
By A Customer
Format:Paperback
This is the best portuguese grammar book I have come across out of my vast collection of portuguese study materials. The author simplifies the distinction between the use of various tenses, demonstratives, articles and other aspects of grammar usage through narratives and examples. This book has been absolutely essential to my learning. My fiance's family have commented that I articulate better than their relatives in Portugal. With the help of this book, I am able to write letters overseas. My fiances' family overseas are very impressed especially since I am not portuguese. I highly recommend this book. The overall format, content and strucuture is better than any language textbook I have come across.

4.0 out of 5 stars Old but good.
Very old - published in 1965! But Portuguese grammar has not changed, so its age does not really matter. You have to work hard to follow it, nobody dumbed down in the 1960s! Read more

I bought this book without realising that it was European Portuguese. The book is a bit confusing. My English-speaking husband didn't like it very much.
