Review

James Barlow Irish Pharmacy Journal, January 2005
"Chapters are thorough and well referenced and the text may be consulted as a trustworthy and learned source of information on the toxicology of essential oils, and would be a useful reference guide for healthcare professionals and practitioners."

Product Description

The safe use of essential oils is of key importance in the practice of aromatherapy. Based on up-to-date research findings, this practical, comprehensive guide gives detailed profiles of essential oils, safety guidelines for practitioners, cautions and contradictions and extensive referencing. This is an invaluable textbook to aid safe practice for the professional. It clearly cites research material to indicate safely profiles both for several hundred common (and uncommon) essential oils and also for possible cautions implicated in individual chemical constituents of those oils. It covers the metabolism of essential oils in the body, and how these have implication when working with specific conditions, for example, pregnancy, those with compromised excretory or detoxification functions, cancer.

This book also explodes some of the 'unthinking' safety cautions which a lot of other texts copy from each other, which were started from a lack of understanding of the importance of understanding botanicals, rather than the common name of a species.

Though complex, it is extremely well set out, and has admirable clarity in the laying out of its information. It is very much a reference book, rather than a coffee table book on the subject!

This book would be my automatic starting point for finding out any cautions connected with a novel oil (along with Julia Lawless's Encyclopaedia for a view of its historical use)

I could wish it also included more of the extensive positive research which exists on essential oils, although this is of course not the remit of a book which focuses specifically on safety.

I would also recommend it in conjunction with Kurt Schnaubelt's very excellent writings - which render 'dry' science as something marvellous and exciting, due to his approach which marries science with a vitalist approach.

Any aromatherapist must of course make certain that safe practice is the foundation for her/his work. Though this book is now quite old, it still fills a gap in the market, and is, to my knowledge the only reasonably priced book which focuses only on safety - contraindications and cautions for conditions and specific client groups, specific oils and specific chemical constituents within specific oils.

It is certainly one of the most well thumbed books on my groaning aromatherapy shelf, the first one I turn to when working with clients presenting with health issues which I suspect have led to compromise in the actions of liver, kidneys, the skin itself, or are on prescription medication which may affect the safe choice of specific oils. Nor would i add a new oil to my extensive kit before starting my research into it via the EOS book

The elderly date of last revision of the book, and the absence of a body of information about recent positive research studies prohibit the final 5th star; however I can't afford Bob Harris's EORC database (several hundred pounds)

Until Robert brings out a revised version (I believe this has been planned for MANY years) my battered EOS will continue to suffer the wear and tear of constant handling

This book provided me with the information i was looking for in order to verify that i was complying with guidelines in healthcare. An extremely important read for Qualified Clinical Aromatherapists, who wish to extend their knowledge and work within safe guidelines in health care environments, hospitals, nursing homes, residential care and palliative units. A good source for health care professionals who are not familiar with the use of essential oils and wish to familiaris themselves with the benefits and use of essential oils. I found this an excellent resource for qualified Aromatherapists and all health care professionals.
