More About the Author

Professor Edward Tobias greatly enjoys teaching others about the subject (Medical Genetics) that continues to fill him with genuine excitement, fascination and amazement. His teaching at Glasgow University has led to three recent Student-awarded Teaching Awards (for Best College Teacher 2014, Best College Teacher 2013 and Best Subject Area 2012) from the Student Representative Council, as well as a personal Teaching Excellence Award from the Senate Office of the University of Glasgow. He believes that Medical Genetics is a fascinating and exciting subject but can often appear overly complex. Individual students have described him as "a brilliant teacher... who is passionate about his subject", who has "made the subject of Medical Genetics understandable for all abilities" and has "made the topic (genetics) seem simple!"

At Glasgow University, he is the lead for the undergraduate curriculum in medical genetics for MBChB year 3. For that course, he personally delivers an entire series of multimedia interactive lectures and also leads case-based learning.

Prof Tobias is also involved in running and teaching the internationally renowned Glasgow University MSc in Medical Genetics course, which attracts a large number of students from all over the world. He and his MSc teaching colleagues were finalists in the Prospects UK national postgraduate teaching team awards 2013 and won a teaching team award in 2014. He lectures on 10 other courses.

Prof Tobias has also created a 30-page website that is freely accessible at www.essentialmedgen.com which has provided guidance to web resources and also genetics updates to visitors from the UK and well over 100 other countries.

Essential Medical Genetics, his first textbook, is now selling in over 60 countries worldwide and he is also the author of a second textbook (Medical Genetics for the MRCOG and Beyond) plus several book chapters on Medical Genetics in international specialist textbooks. He is also an external examiner for postgraduate medical genetics at two other UK universities.

He is fortunate in having so many extremely helpful colleagues in both Glasgow University and the National Health Service, to whom he is most grateful.

Product Description

Review

Essential Medical Genetics is the perfect resource for a course on medical genetics, and is now accompanied by a regularly updated website and the FREE enhanced Wiley Desktop Edition (upon purchase of the book) .   (MedReport, 9 October 2012)

I have watched this textbook from its first inception and was disappointed that there was no new edition for so many years. Having waited, the result now is excellent and it has overcome my preference for Emery′s Elements as a basic human genetics text. Emeritus Professor in Clinical Genetics

"I find the reference to electronic resources particularly useful, especially for people who approach clinical genetics for the first time and are not familiar with these tools." Dr Sixto García–Miñaúr, Imperial College London, and Hospital Universitario La Paz, Madrid, Spain

Reviews of the previous edition
"This book is an easy to read, well illustrated introduction to medical genetics. It deals nicely with all the classical aspects of the subject..." Black Bag, Medical Students′ Society of Bristol University

"...a justifiably popular introductory text." The British Medical Journal

From the Back Cover

Essential Medical Genetics provides students, clinicians, counsellors and scientists with the up–to–date information they need regarding the basic principles underlying medical genetics. It also provides guidance on how to apply current knowledge in clinical contexts, covering a wide variety of topics: from genome structure and function to mutations, screening and risk assessment for inherited disorders.

This sixth edition has been substantially updated to include, for instance, the latest information on the Human Genome Project as well as several new molecular genetic and chromosome analysis techniques. In full colour throughout, it includes a number of brand new features, including: a large number of self–assessment questions; Essentials chapter summaries; further reading suggestions; and case study scenarios introducing clinical situations. An invaluable new section gives illustrated practical advice regarding how to choose the best available online genetic databases and also, importantly, how to most easily and most efficiently use them, for a wide range of purposes.

Essential Medical Genetics is the perfect resource for a course on medical genetics, and is now accompanied by a regularly updated website and the FREE enhanced Wiley Desktop Edition (upon purchase of the book).

The companion website at www.wiley.com/go/tobias features figures from the book in PowerPoint format and a link to the authors′ website with regularly updated links to genetic databases and additional self–test questions.

The full-colour 6th edition of this classic textbook includes an equally expansive array of diagrams and illustrations as the previous edition. It still covers everything from DNA to inheritance to clinical applications, but - bearing in mind that the previous edition was originally published in 1997 - it has also been entirely updated! The new edition includes new genetic techniques, the completion of the human genome project and the use of electronic databases, while keeping the easy-reading style of earlier editions.

This is a great starter text for anyone in the field of medical genetics, from biology students to counsellors. The online resources (including various links and question-banks) allow students to test themselves and ensure that readers can be kept updated on the rapidly developing field.

As a medical student it is always challenging with medical genetics to know how much information you are expected to be competent with in order to prepare you for being a doctor & before that your exams. This book attempts to bridge the gap between what the student is expected & needs to know.

The first section of this text gives the student information on the basics of genetics such as the structure of DNA, it's inheritance and the types of genetic problems that can occur through the different inheritance methods. The second section of this title provides the reader with clinical application of Genetics in preparation for the clinical environment.

This book is certainly of a high quality and the information contained within it is up-to-date, fitting with current clinical practice so cannot be faulted on this front. For any student having read this, you should have a firm foundation in medical genetics & be able to understand how conditions arise. However in this students opinion this text is not true to it's title in being 'Essential Medical Genetics' for the second half of the book does not provide the reader with information that is easy to locate on the common presentations of important genetic conditions. There are diagrams and images used in this book but most of the images are in black and white, it is my opinion that the lack of tables or diagrams giving you a summary of the common presenting features of genetic conditions, something that is popular in examinations is a real let down for this book.

In conclusion I would not encourage all medical students to go out and purchase this book as a must read for medical school.

Very good, explaining clearly what is required without being too "wordy" and it has clear illustrations. The fact that there is also a desktop version that can be downloaded and a website with any necessary updates is an added bonus.

During my year as a Masters student in Medical Genetics I had purchased the previous edition and as a class we all referred to it throughout the lecture series. It is not only beneficial for anyone starting out in the field of Medical Genetics, but is a must for anyone studying for the MSc.

Details of experiments carried out in the investigation of families with various genetic conditions, plus data has been provided by scientists within the department. This is particularly advantageous, as it provides insight into not only current techniques but also the running of a diagnostic medical genetics laboratory.

Overall clear, conscise and very relevant in the field of medical genetics both clinially and laboratory based.
