Review

"It is concise, complete, and engaging…students, could they be encouraged to hang onto it, would find it an ongoing, useful resource…highly recommended." (CHOICE, July 2006)

"The text and web site complement one another and are excellent at giving the reader a workable grasp of the material." (MAA Reviews, July 3, 2006)

Product Description

Basic Mathematics and Statistics for Science is a low–level introduction to the essential techniques students need to understand. It assumes little prior knowledge, and adopts a gentle approach that leads through examples in the book and website.

No other text provides this range of educational support for science students. The integration between book and website provides study options that would be impossible through a book alone, and allows students to study in ways that suit their own circumstances and preferences.

The combination of book and website also provides ready–prepared material for lectures, tutorials and computer practicals. Tutors can use the material to develop a variety of coherent programme using different learning styles.

The book develops the mathematics and statistics through examples and questions that reflect the scientific context, and has succeeded in being relevant to a range of undergraduate science programmes.

5.0 out of 5 stars Invaluable book for the statistics involved in science studies, 3 Mar 2010

This book managed to get me through my statistics modules in the first and second years of my degree. Scientists need a way of analysing the data they churn our from their experiments, and all good experiments require repeat results and a range of variables to get the best conclusions. What you end up with is a ridiculous amount of data and a headache trying to understand what it all means. Not any more, thanks to the wonders of modern technology and brilliant minds like Dr. Graham Currell. Armed with Excel, minitab and a copy of this book it's not such a daunting task.

The extensive library of online videos are fantastic. He'll take some equations or problems, and work through it several times with different data. It's easy to follow, and is useful when you just can't see it when it's written down on a page.

I was lucky enough to have him as my teacher and tutorial leader in the first year before he retired. A great man, and a fantastic book.

*Particularly useful in the fields of Forensics and Pharmaceuticals*
