The first thing to say about this release is that it only includes songs from Korn's first six studio albums, so there is nothing from "See You On The Other Side", "Untitled" or "Korn III: Remember Who You Are", of course the reason for this is that The Essential series is a Sony only release and since Korn parted company with Sony/Epic after the release of their greatest hits collection in 2004 so only have the rights to songs from their debut self titled album up to sixth album "Take A Look In The Mirror". Coincidentally it also means that all tracks feature the original line up from Drummer David Silveria who left in late 2006 and more importantly Guitarist Brian 'Head' Welch who left in 2005 and has been sorely missed since.

The album contains 28 tracks spread over 2 disc's and goes in chronological order, so disc 1 covers the first 3 albums(korn, life is peachy & follow the leader) and disc 2 covers the following 3(issues, untouchables & take a look in the mirror) and unlike the greatest hits album it includes album tracks that have not been released as singles. As well as songs not released on the studio albums. Disc one opens with the signature sound of "Blind" and follows on with "Shoots and Ladders", "Clown" and the brilliant "Faget". The catchy sound of "A.D.I.D.A.S." still sounds great now. The track "Proud" that was originally used on the soundtrack to "I Know What You Did Last Summer" and also available on the "Live & Rare" release is included. The album "Life Is Peachy" is represented by five tracks including the brilliant "Freak On A Leash" as well as "Got The Life", "It's On". "All In The Family" includes Fred Durst on vocals as he and Jonathan go back and forth over who's better. "Cameltosis" features Tré Hardson of The Pharcyde on vocals.

KORN: THE BRIAN 'HEAD' WELCH YEARS 11 May 2011

Disc 2 which sees Korn sound get darker with "Falling Away From Me" from the album "Issues". "Jingle Balls" which was given away as a bonus track on some editions of "Issues" is included. The experimental album "Untouchables" is only represented by three tracks, thankfully the excellent "Thoughtless" is included as on the previous greatest hit's album it wasn't. Surprisingly the weakest album "Take A Look In The Mirror" includes four tracks including live favourite "Y'all Want A Single". The Pink Floyd cover "Another Brick In The Wall" which was originally included on Greatest Hits: Vol 1 is included here as is the live version of "Got The Life" that was recorded at CBGB's and was released on the "Live & Rare" album. It's a pity they didn't include more non album tracks such as "Kick The P.A" from the Spawn album, "Sean Olson" from the Crow soundtrack or "Camel Song" from End Of Day's soundtrack.

It's great hearing the twin guitar assault of Head and Munky on these tracks and shows how much Head has been missed since he left. There is some great Korn tracks here, much better selection than the Greatest Hits: Volume 1 release, however theres nothing here Korn fans won't already have, but it would be a good starting place for new fans before discovering their amazing back catalogue.
