Review

"Known for her fun, easy-to-nake patterns, this lovely range is a 'core collection' for preschoolers. Bliss offers up a charming array, from a ballet top to a cosy blanket, a party shrug and a striped tie."
--Junior Magazine, 1st November 2008

Product Description

"Essential Kids" is the perfect project book for anyone struggling to find smart contemporary knitwear designs for their toddler. The 20 projects in the book are knitted in beautiful, classic yarns that are soft and gentle against young skin, but also practical in that they are easy to wash and care for. This delightful collection has been grouped into three main sections: Down Time - which has the perfect designs to keep the kids comfy while they are hanging out at home, Special Time - which is full of unique dress-up garments, and Time Out - which is full of designs for when the little ones are heading out of the house, whether they're setting off to nursery school or taking part in an outdoor activity. Following on from Debbie's very successful previous books, "Essential Baby" and "Simply Baby", with "Essential Kids" you can continue to dress your cherished child in Debbie's exquisite designs as he or she grows up.

Style for kids 10 Dec 2008
By K. Platt TOP 50 REVIEWER
This book highlights twenty fabulous knitting patterns for children from ages two to five. The patterns are divided into three sections Down Time, Special Time and Time Out inspired by all the wonderful activities pre-school children discover.

More than just knits for kids, this book offers blankets, toys, cushions and so much more. The designs are superb encompassing simple modern style that your kids will want to wear and you'll want to knit. The designs are modelled by angels! The fabulous photos bring everything to life.

As a bonus, this book includes a how to knit section and how to read a pattern. It talks about yarn and caring for garments. Most of the patterns are easy stocking stitch, garter stitch is used effectively and there's the odd cable and a flurry of fair-isle thrown in for good measure. There is also a complete alphabet given for use in knitting initials. The instructions are clear and easy to follow.

This is an excellent book for a beginner knitter, but many, even experienced designers like myself, will fall in love with the styles in this book.

Great ideas 12 July 2011
I have made up the Anorak on page 116 and it look very good and is warm and cosy. It will be going to Hong Kong New Territories in the next few days and will keep a friends child warm this winter. Was dissapointed to see one or two items that I have in other D.B. books, thePea Jacket being one which I made up a few years ago. The tie and pencil case are something I will never make but like the beaded bag. The Gillet is very good and will be my next item out of this book.

I bought this book as I was looking for patterns that would fit my 5 year old son. He's about average height/weight for his age, so I went for this book rather than knitting from the "9 to 5" book that I already own (which has patterns starting from age 5/6). This book has patterns up to age 4-5, which I thought would be fine for him.

I have knitted the Boys Hoodie - and although I didn't enjoy the swathes of stocking stitch, I could see it was worth it for the lovely looking garment that was emerging. However, even though I was extra careful about getting the right gauge (and even re-started the garment after realising I was way out), this is HUGE! It fits my 9 year old daughter! My poor son, who was very excited about the new jumper, will have to wait 2-3 years before it fits :(.

The book is lovely, and the tips at the beginning are great for beginners, helping them to knit the items within the book. But, please be careful about the size you pick for your little one!
