This compilation contains a wide range of Junior Walker's recordings, at Motown. It's a nice little compilation, with his versions of other artist's hits, and 'what does it take (to win your love)', and 'take me girl I'm ready', alone, make this CD a worthwhile purchase, at a very reasonable price, too!

5.0 out of 5 stars Blast from the Past 16 April 2011

Fabulous album, takes you right back to the raw soul of the late 60s, early 70s. Fantastic sax, haunting vocals, all the keynote hits from this accomplished band. Astonishing that there have not been (to my knowledge) smash hit covers of these seminal melodies.

Jnr Walker hardly fitted Berry Gordy's "Sound Of Young America" image for Motown, being easily the oldest of the labels stars.

His sound wasn't really that typical of Motown either with a voice that was 'rougher' & more gritty than the labels usual sound.

He also played sax & was (I think) the only instrumentalist to have hits for Motown.

In the early days the sax was raw & usually found on Junior's more obviously Motown songs such as "I'm A Road Runner" & "How Sweet It Is To Be Loved By You" & his No. 1 song "Shot Gun".

Later in his career his biggest hits (especially in the UK) were more sweet soul such as "Walk In The Night".

But this album does include some great tunes from that period such as "Take Me Girl I'm Ready" and What Does It Take". These were big hits and featured more mellow sax & singing with very nice sounding girl singers providing back up.

The album also includes two absolute corkers - the Northern Soul fave "I Ain't Going Nowhere" (co written by Gloria Jones, one time girl friend of Marc Bolan) & the truly superb ballad "I Need You Here Right Now" featuring fine mellow sax & the exquisite vocals of Thelma Houston.

Other nice but lesser known tracks include "Right On Brothers & Sisters" and "Don't Blame The Children" both written by the great Johnny Bristol and both again of the 'sweet' soul variety.

All in all a great album at a very good price. One or two of Junior's biggest hits are missing otherwise its a 5 star album!

An 'essential' purchase at this price.
