This compilation, released in France, is basically the same as The Essential Jean Michel Jarre that was released in the UK in 1983 - the only differences are the cover and two of the tracks ('Souvenir of China' replaces 'The Overture' and 'Zoolookologie' replaces 'Equinoxe 1'). Strangely, despite the title stating 1986, this album was actually released in 1985 and so does not feature anything from Rendez-Vous (1986) - it only covers Jarre's first five albums: Oxygene (1976), Equinoxe (1978), Magnetic Fields (1981), The Concerts In China (1982) and Zoolook (1984). It is also curious that Zoolook is only represented by one track: 'Zoolookologie', it being the 1985 remix version.
However despite these oddities it is still a good compilation and includes all his most famous tracks from this period, the only notable omissions perhaps being 'Equinoxe 7', 'Ethnicolor' and 'Zoolook'. It also features lesser known pieces such as 'Fishing Junks at Sunset' and the second part of 'Magnetic Fields 1' as on the UK version. It does have the same weakness as the UK version in that half of the tracks are radio edits and thus are shorter than the full length originals. For that reason the German version of this album: Musik Aus Zeit Und Raum (1983) is better as it has fewer edited tracks and a longer running time, but any of the three versions of this album will make an excellent introduction to the music of Jean Michel Jarre. This particular French import and quite rare album will certainly appeal to collectors and Jarre completists.
