A very solid collection of tales that encompass triumph and tragedy.
This volume was brought out in time to ride the wake of the recent movie but the tales gathered here are from the very early years 1969-1971.
Starting with a 2 issue story introducing the superb looking Controller closely followed by the Night Phantom and a tag team of two old Marvel favourites The Unicorn and the Red Ghost. Other old Marvel foes like The Titanium Man, Lucifer, the Collector and Zodiac are mixed in with a new Crimson Dynamo, Midas, Firebrand, Spy-Master and a group of alien planet-formers led by the Foreman.
Guest appearances from the Sub-Mariner, Daredevil, Nick Fury and the Avengers.
The back stories are very important in the early days, there is a tragic love interest with Janice Cord, Madame Masque (Whitney Frost) plays a major role as does Jasper Sitwell (Tony Stark's SHIELD bodyguard) and Eddie March and Kevin O'Brian appear as do, briefly, Happy Hogan and Pepper Potts.
This volume is laced with stories involving ecology, racism and global industrial espionage. Tony Stark also has to undergo surgery.
The artwork is great, mainly by George Tuska and Don Heck with a few assists and the bulk of the story writing by Archie Goodwin, Allyn Brodsky and Gerry Conway. Being in black & white does detract slightly but at this price you can not argue with the value for money and it brought back many memories.
