I have just finished working through this book and have learned a LOT from it.

If however you are looking for a general introduction to songwriting, this isn't it. It teaches lyric structure, not specifically rhyme or songwriting ideas (though you'll learn a little about both as a by-product). For an all-round intro to songwriting, I suggest Sheila Davis' 'Successful Lyric Writing.'

But if you're wanting to focus in on structure itself, then this is great. It's written by a lecturer from an American songwriting college, and is full of exercises to help you learn the concepts and try them out for yourself.

I'm now much more aware of how to write a good song - and shall be revising some of mine! I can also more easily analyse some of the songs of the 'greats', even though this book itself doesn't use many songs I know. That could have been done deliberately - I found it gave me a fresh eye to use on the learning material.

Songwriting consists of a number of different elements: Lyrics, melody, harmony and arrangement.

This excellent book focuses on just one element of lyric writing: Lyrical form and structure. It aims to give you tools and techniques to analyze the building-blocks of your own songs and help you write better lyrics with less pain and guesswork than would otherwise be required - and it succeeds in this aim.

Pattison's writing is down-to-earth and easy to read and comprehend. The material is well laid out on the page and ideas progress clearly and logically from one section to another. Each chapter contains a wealth of information and there are plenty of exercises for you to try out. The narrow focus of the book means it doesn't get bogged-down trying to do everything. It also means that although the book is quite short (102 pages) there's not an ounce of filler anywhere so it's good value for money. Once you're familiar with the subject matter the clear chapter headings mean you can easily use the book for reference.

If you're looking for a book on song structure you can't go far wrong with this.

Loads of easily explained tips and tricks - all wrapped up in a cohesive and structured approach to songwriting. Lots of exercises to practice and neat small chapters - you can even read it on the train or bus to work. I highly recommend this one. It is good for those starting out in writing lyrics as well as those who have been writing for years - as a refresher and new perspective if you have not come across these tools before.
