4.0 out of 5 stars From "hero" to avenging angel, 9 Aug 2008
By I. R. Kerr (Lancashire) - See all my reviews
(TOP 500 REVIEWER)    (REAL NAME)
The first part of this book continues with Johnny Blaze employed as a stunt-man at a movie studio, he is still romantically linked to Karen Page and Roxanne Simpson and doing stunts for the Stunt-Master.
This part of the book is firmly linked with the rest of the Marvel universe and we get old villains like the Gladiator, Eel, the return of the Orb and even the dread Dormammu in a tale guest-starring Doctor Strange. There's also guest appearances by the Ghost Rider's old team The Champions as well as Hawkeye and the Western star Two-Gun Kid.
There are a few new threats from Water Wizard, Enforcer, Malice, Dr. Druid, the Manticore and the ghostly Bounty Hunter.
The second part of the book sees Johnny setting off across the U.S.A. and the tales concentrate more on him being an agent of vengeance. He fights a mutant child and even has a cycle race against Death before settling in and facing a gang who worship death, a deranged nuclear scientist, hijackers, the Laurel and Hardy hobos, an old wizard The Crimson Mage, and a group of vampires.
This part also sees him lose his Stunt-Biker title to Flagg Fargo and ends with an OK two parter as he faces the Cheyenne legend of the Manitou with assistance from an old western hero The Night Rider, who was known as The Ghost Rider when first introduced in early 1967, this is a nice touch.
The artwork, largely by Don Perlin, is pretty decent and although not all of the stories are top grade there are only a few lesser tales here so it is well worth 4 stars.
