Book Description

3 May 2002 Jimmy Bruno Jazz Guitar
Guitarists face a sometimes overwhelming number of choices as to where to play a given note or phrase and what fingering to use. While a given fingering for a scale or phrase may be possible, it may not be practical. In this book, jazz guitarist Jimmy Bruno lays out six fingerings for the major scales which he has found to be the most efficient in his thirty years of professional playing. These patterns are then used to derive fingerings for the dorian mode, mixolydian mode, natural minor, harmonic minor, and melodic minor scales. Illustrations are provided in notation and tablature with fretboard diagrams aiding visualization. By using these fingerings consistently, the guitarist will eliminate all unnecessary fingerings and remove a major obstacle to his or her development as a musician.

This short, slightly over A4-sized book (32 pages, of which the last four are rather poorly reproduced and irrelevant full-page black-and-white photographs of Jimmy Bruno's signature Benedetto guitar prototype) represents Mr. Bruno's basic kit of scales and fingerings for the player who wants to be able to play over jazz changes. As a professional player with a reputation for impatience with phoniness, he has analysed his own performance habits and identified six scale types that must be mastered and three pairs of related fingerings for each scale. (The title is slightly misleading in this respect: six scales, but a total of thirty-six fingerings. To be fair to the author, each set of six fingerings is related: they aren't so much different fingerings as the same fingering adapted.)

The book covers the major scale and its Dorian and Mixolydian modes, and the natural, harmonic and melodic minor scales. Each scale is presented in the forms that Jimmy Bruno considers most practically usable. Each scale is shown starting on both the fifth and sixth strings, second or fourth finger, and progressing either 'vertically' - i.e., across the neck with no or minimal out-of-position notes - or 'horizontally' - i.e., along the neck with at least one position shift. Each fingering is shown in three ways: conventional notation, tablature, and neck diagram. The fingering is then moved according to the cycle of fifths to generate all the scales of that type in a systematic and musical fashion that aids memorisation.

Mr. Bruno quite rightly places heavy emphasis on mental visualisation of the fingerboard and use of systematic fingering as the key to freeing the player from uncertainty.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best Book for Scales 22 Dec 2010
By Chris Downing TOP 500 REVIEWER

This book is almost a handout you'd get from a Jimmy Bruno workshop (probably is actually). If you've seen his DVD "No Nonsense Jazz Guitar" then you'll recognise this book is a documentation of all the scales and scales ideas he talks about in that DVD. All the scales you'll ever need can be developed from Jimmy's six patterns here - three pairs played from the 6th string root or the 5th string. Easy to learn, consistent fingering, and you'll understand how to use them to create all the modal scales as well. Not lots of text in this book - get a copy of Jimmy's DVD "No Nonsence Jazz Guitar" to go with it. Used with the DVD, you'll probably never need any more scales material.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wish I'd had this book years ago 28 Jun 2014

I don't normally write reviews but felt compelled to say something about this booklet. I've played (rock/pop) guitar for more years than I care to remember and I'm not that all that bad. But this slim volume has transformed my playing and enjoyment of the guitar. There is an admirable logic to the way in which Jimmy Bruno has configured these scales and time spent practicing them is time well spent. Given the amount of time I have spent with this booklet over the past two years it must be the best value book I have ever bought.

5.0 out of 5 stars music theory for dummies 9 May 2013

This is the holy grail for aspiring (and not so aspiring) guitarists who can't read notation - it gives you all the basic scales you need to fully map out your fretboard. If this book had been available 20 years ago I would be a much better guitarist than I am today.
