About the Author

Julie Brega's interest in eventing led her to work with competition horses and, having gained her BHSII, she set up her own equestrian business and trained many students for BHS examinations. Seeing the need for a structured system of study, she began to run correspondence courses and from this developed The Open College of Equine Studies, which now provides distance tuition of the highest quality to students worldwide from its base in Suffolk.

As mentioned in the previous review, anyone studying at National Diploma level will find them perfectly acceptable. However, for those studying at Higher levels, they are a perfect tool for revision.

The information has been condensed sufficiently, so you avoid paragraphs of 'waffle' (be it 'scientific' or just plan unnecessary!) and with In-text questions to aid memory!

Please note - Not recommended to people studying with TOCES on the BTEC or degree programmes. Most the information will already be in course material!

Review edited to say, that after a conversation with a tutor all I can say is BEWARE! This book is filled with mistakes, which in my opinion are easy to accept as fact until you are working at a level much higher than this book will take you. The horse does not do alveolar recruitment, nor does the mare have four mammary glands divided into two udders (she has two mammary glands with two teat cysterns each). These are two mistakes that I know of, but I'm sure there are more.

The ONLY way I would recommed this book is as background reading to understand another book/paper etc better. Rely on it by itself at your peril! There are better equine biology books out there for this level of study, e.g. Horse Biology by Zoe Davies.

Exactly what it says on the cover equine anatomy and physiology, a good book that gives you diagrams and explanations of what you want. no more and no less. The other books are necessary for further detail, such as disease in relation to the bodily systems.
