Ella Fitzgerald needs no introduction as one of the finest jazz singers ever, so having only one of her CDs, I picked this up cheap in a sale. Sixty excellent performances in reasonable sound quality should make this set a good sampler of her work, but it is let down by the shoddy presentation. The songs are compiled in apparently random order - for example several of her collaborations with Louis Armstrong are here, but scattered across the three discs. And there are no liner notes beyond basic composer credits and the name of the main accompanist or orchestra featured - not even the year of release or the name of the original record label.
In short, if you just want a cheap sampler of Ella's singing, this may fit the bill. if you want to delive more deeply into her work, this is not for you.
