Product Description

"This is an excellent primer for those starting out in echocardiography and even those who have been doing it for a while. It's clearly written by someone who is near enough to the front end of their training that they remember what others find or may find difficult to understand. The text is extremely readable with useful illustrations and good quality images."

BMA Medical Book Awards - Highly Commended Award

"This [is a] well organized, structured and concisely written book! This volume represents a highly recommendable introduction to the exciting world of echocardiography."

European Journal of Radiology

Product Description

This book is a step-by-step manual for the complete echo-novice. It should be the only book needed to become a proficient echocardiographer. The text focuses on the practicalities of performing an examination, and the interpretation of images. Avoiding unnecessary technicalities, it places particular emphasis on the diagnostic features of sample cases and covers the entire breadth of adult cardiology. The majority of the echo images are also available in a dynamic form on the Expert Consult platform. Also included is access to 100 case scenarios and images for self-assessment interpretation. The combination of the book and the website materials provides an unparalleled learning experience for people who do not routinely practise echocardiography.

  • The text covers the basic concepts of how ultrasound works and looks at practical aspects of how to perform an echo.
  • It examines both normal function as well as the whole range of pathologies encountered in day-to-day clinical practice.
  • There is particular emphasis on how to report your interpretation of the echo findings.
  • The book is highly illustrated throughout with real examples many of which are available to view in dynamic form on the Expert Consult platform, thus offering a comprehensive library of echo movies.
  • The text is fully up to date with the latest recommendations of the American Society of Echocardiography as well as equivalents from the British Society of Echocardiography
  • 100 self-assessment cases on the Expert Consult platform test knowledge and interpretation skills and are aimed at BSE accreditation exam level
  • The full text of the book is available on the Expert Consult platform
  • There are new chapters on 3D echo and right ventricular pathologies.
  • The text has been fully updated and there are more than 200 new images to illustrate state-of-the-art echo.
  • The presentation of the echo images has been simplified with the addition of a fold-out flap on the book referencing the key areas of anatomical detail.
  • The text now includes the latest recommendations of the American Society of Echocardiography as well as the equivalents from the British Society of Echocardiography

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent introduction to echocardiography 29 Nov 2007
Essential echocardiography is a superb introduction to the secrets of echocardiography. It is easy to read with many high quality pictures. An extra bonus is the CD with relevant echo movies. The self-test is a useful way of establishing what has been learnt. I highly recommend this book/CD if you are new to echocardiography or if you would like to refresh your basic knowledge.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent introductory book 12 Mar 2014

I'm a first year cardiology fellow. This book is just perfect as an introduction to echo. It is beautifully written, concise, and yet comprehensive. Extremely helpful. It is also small so you can use it as a quick reference while going through your first few months of echo. I just bought Feigenbaum's, but I think such an encyclopedic work can be tackled with much more confidence after a simpler read such as this one.

I have read more or less all books about echocardiography but this one is is a masterpiece. He explains most of the hemodynamics in an easy way and simultaneously keep the level high. It also gives You invaluable ways to approach different pathologies and what to focuse on. You can easily miss stuff when You are reading a big textbook but this book is a diamond for You who really are dedicated to echocardiography!

An appropriately-named and well written text. Easy to read and printed on good quality paper with numerous colour photos and illustrations to supplement the text. Concise and to the point. The layout is ahead of other texts in this category. If you can only afford to purchase one basic introductory book on echocardiography - get this one !
