5.0 out of 5 stars Will the real Defenders please stand up., 21 Jan 2009
By I. R. Kerr (Lancashire) - See all my reviews
(TOP 500 REVIEWER)    (REAL NAME)
This massive volume covers 31 issues from Defenders 61 to 91 (1978-1981) which are reprinted in black & white.
It starts off bad for the team who are joined briefly by Spider-Man as Lunatik returns and escapes yet again. Dollar Bill's disastrous idea to advertise for new team members spread over 4 issues brings together a mass of heroes both old and some fairly new to the scene and a whole host of super-villains. At the same time it ties up a few loose ends with Red Guardian and The Presence.
The Defender for a Day saga is the start of a bad period for the team and some great story lines.
Valkyrie goes to Valhalla to quell a civil war and is soon joined by her newly dead allies. The Lunatik saga unfolds over another 4 issues as Dr. Strange returns as they start the fight against the Unnameable in another dimension.
This volume also saw the end of the brief Omega series and The Wasp and Moondragon appearing. The Wasp stays with the team briefly as an all female Defenders, assisted by Yellowjacket, fight off the Mandrill whilst the men Dr. Strange and Hulk are assisted by Sub-Mariner as they continue the off-world rebellion against the Unnameable.
During this time Kyle (Nighthawk) is grounded as he fights against the Internal Revenue Service, FBI and others investigating his finances.
Sub-Mariner returns in another memorable tale as Atlantis and Wakanda come to the brink of war over smuggling technology forcing the Black Panther to intervene. That tale nicely segues into the return of the Mandrill whilst Kyle is tied up in court, which allows Daredevil onto the scene to fight his old enemy. The Mandrill tale is superb as it dwells into his past as a mutant and his reasons for turning evil.
Along with a disastrous bout against Foolkiller there's quite a lot about Hellcat's (Patsy Walker) past as her ex-husband enters the scene and guest appearances by fellow 1940's creation Millie the Model. There are also several pro-Greenpeace and anti-whaling messages.
I have to admit I was not overly sold on the Unnameable stories but the strength of these tales as a whole is the scripting by David Kraft and Ed Hannigan who managed to keep so many plot strands going and it was a very enjoyable read.
