Book Description

1 Sep 2006
In "Essential Crochet", Erika Knight, international designer and author of the hugely popular "Simple Crochet", brings crochet design bang up-to-date for the modern maker. At a moment, when many of us are keen to stamp our lives and our homes with a touch of individuality, these beautiful textiles are the ideal solution to indulge ourselves, to bestow as gifts and to create modern heirloom pieces. With 30 beautiful projects for homewares and accessories, Erika cleverly combines the nostalgic with the contemporary to entice beginners into this established craft and to inspire experienced practitioners to try new ideas and materials. With a complete guide to the basics of how to crochet, illustrated with step-by-step photographs, the essential crochet techniques are all that is needed to create the projects in the book. Designs are grouped thematically by style and colour palette, embracing both the modern and the traditional. They range from a basic patchwork throw made from an easy-care wool cotton in natural shades and a filet lace cushion in crisp white cotton with timeless appeal, to a contemporary tablemat made of pearlised wire and a glamorous pin-on corsage. Each pattern has been devised for the homemaker, with all instructions clearly explained so the minimal number of steps provides the maximum results.

3.0 out of 5 stars Did the proof-reader take a day off? 9 April 2007
Format:Paperback
I bought this book a few months ago and have had a go at a few of the projects. The projects themselves look lovely, but in some cases the patterns leave a lot to be desired. I tried the filet lace cushion but soon found that the pattern was riddled with mistakes, with stitches and even whole rounds missing, and eventually had to use the photo as a guide along with the incomplete pattern.

3.0 out of 5 stars Puzzling in parts... 5 Jun 2009
Format:Paperback
I got this book by mistake. Well, I ordered it from the library instead of Simple Crochet by the same author. I can understand why this book is getting mixed reviews. Yes, it is filled with errors (I reckon it's been 'translated' from American) and the photo's, whilst inspiring, don't help very much because they're too off-the-wall and obscure, but it's full of nice projects. Ms Knight doesn't always make it clear what she means - for example she assumes you'll figure out by yourself how to work subsequent rows of solomon's knot. The patchwork blanket is delightful, but I don't understand why it isn't joined on the last round instead of stitched together. That said, it's worth a look for the inspirational pieces she's made. Get it from the library first, though, instead of forking out. Oh, and don't let her catch you making anything in the book for money - the patterns are heavily copyrighted.

4.0 out of 5 stars essential crochet 17 Feb 2010
Format:Paperback
I was at the next to last row on the rose cushion when I realised, as other reviewers have, that there was somthing wrong with the instructions. Went to WWW.Erikaknight.co.uk where they list errata for this and other of her books. I have now finished the cushion and am really pleased with it. There are lots of lovely bright inspirational pictures in this book, and I would recommend it even to anyone who hasn't done a lot of crochet.
