3.0 out of 5 stars Good value collection... but... 31 Mar 2007
Format:Audio CD
This 6 CD collection contains most of the popular classical music you could every want and is priced competitively. However many of the recordings are very old and the sound quality is at best adequate. A lot of the performances although technically excellent are dull and uninspiring. The packaging is bland with minimal information about the music or performers. If you want quality rather than quantity look elsewhere.

There are plenty of classical music samplers on the market, some better than others. This is very much a case of don't just mind the quality, feel the width. The fact that this set offers you six CD's means that you get a broad, eclectic range of the more popular classics. Of course, what you also get is a selection of the highlights from classic works - one of Grieg's best loved melodies, one of Orff's more dramatic moments.

This sampler, however, is largely restricted to the more melodic tunes. As someone who does like to have some background music playing when I'm reading or writing, I can't complain about that. The six CD's will give you a lot of very enjoyable music which you can have playing while you relax or concentrate on some task. There is enough variety in the selection to reward your ears even when you're not concentrating on the sounds.

But the real joy of a selection like this is that it might give you the confidence to delve deeper into classical music. There is so much pretension in the music world, if you have little musical knowledge to begin with, it can be a bit daunting trying to explore the mysteries of the classics. Ignore all the hype and all the flowery language. Allow yourself to sit back and listen to some of these tracks, then take yourself out and listen to the longer, full versions of your favourites. Let your ear be your guide - have a listen to Radio 3 instead of Classic FM!

An entertaining selection which should stimulate your ears, and excellent value ... which should reward your pocket!

5.0 out of 5 stars First class introduction to classical music 6 Mar 2002
By A Customer
Format:Audio CD
There is a glut of classical music compilations available and for the uninitiated it can be a bit of a stab in the dark as to which to pick out. Having listened to several, I would commend this selection above all others. Not only is it more extensive than most (all?), the six CD's are neatly arranged by theme. The recordings themselves are generally fairly good and will allow the listener to find composers or pieces that he or she will want to listen to further.

Format:Audio CD
An excellent Classical Compilation. - This box set of 6 CD's with 7 hours of music is an excellent collection. The Music is divided into categories, each CD covering one.

The CD provides a good introduction to classical music with many popular pieces, and it is excellent value for money!

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant Collection 23 Oct 2004
Format:Audio CD
This set has all the popular pieces of classical music that we all love. It is broken up into 6 CDs which are on a theme; so depending on your mood you can choose which CD to play.
The recordings are very reasonable as well.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good beginner's collection 27 Dec 2004
By A Customer
Format:Audio CD|Amazon Verified Purchase
A very wide selection of pieces, organised into themes, although rather loosely if you ask me!! Some of them just didn't fit the theme. Mostly a good selection, but a few pieces that let the collection down.

A very good collection for someone new to classical music, but most classical fans will have the best pieces on this collection already and would do better buying something like the fantastic Tchaikovsky box set they have here.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic Album of Brilliant Pieces 12 July 2004
Format:Audio CD
I was feeling a bit suspicious about the CD Set of this Collection. Since similar types of the Collection always available everywhere, i thought it would be hocus pocus to order such a CD on net. But when i dispatched it, i explicitly did comprehend that not only was it cheapier than the domestic market price; but also it was a unique selection of Famous Classics.
I offer The Essential Classics Collection [BOX SET] to the Classical Music Fans, assuring them that they will enjoy with the recording, indeed.

5.0 out of 5 stars A great introduction 7 Aug 2004
Format:Audio CD
It's very rare that I type anything (poor English skills) but this box set was/is wonderful. If you've heard a few of the great classical tunes on tv or whatever, and like them - this is for you. If you're after your first set of classical CDs, this collection is just what your looking for. I'm not saying that you will love every tune, but at this price, you can't turn it down! Introduce your self to the world of classical music with this box set, I cant see how anyone could be disappointed
