About the Author

Larry McCabe was born in Kansas City, Missouri. He studied music with a number of teachers including Eldon Shamblin, legendary swing guitarist and arranger for Bob Wills. Deciding on freelance teaching as a music career, Larry received his degree in education from the University of Arizona in 1979. Since graduating from college, Larry has taught over 30,000 private music lessons. An experienced blues guitarist, he played in the Gulf Coast Blues Band, wrote a Living Blues magazine column called "Blues Box," and is currently on the nominating committee for the annual W. C Handy awards. Larry's vast experience in private teaching has given him a unique understanding of the educational needs of the typical music student. Beginning with Blues, Boogie and Rock Guitar in 1984, he has written a number of Mel Bay books on various subjects including guitar, bass, and song writing techniques.

5.0 out of 5 stars a book that was written to be played not read 8 Sep 2008
By Phony Money - Published on Amazon.com
This is a book that was written to be played not read. From day one, you are introduced to the 3 basic forms of the blues rhythm structures(12 bars). Then from that point on, Larry begin to introduce substitutions taking you from simple arrangements to professional ones. You will notice a huge different in your playing before you get to blues pattern 7. Plus this book makes learning fun. All examples are on the CD, contains chord frames, and simple to read format.

This book is definitely worth the time, money and effort because you will love the results.

4.0 out of 5 stars Exactly what they said it is... 16 Mar 2011

Well, it's exactly what the title says...
progressions.

And just about all of them are played out with roughly the same chord structures throughout the book and CD...boring right? Not.

If you read everything in each chapter and have a little chord theory under your belt, then this is a great book to kick off some really nice blues tunes. Advice is given with each progression as to what you might do "on your own" to change it up. Couple this with knowing when it's alright to swap a Major for a 9th and you'll really have something.

Beginners might be ok with this, but if you're planning on memorizing a bunch of progressions without knowing how to change the key...
it's going to get dull really quick.

For those with some theory under their belts...
this is a great tool to break out of the standard blues progressions.
