4.0 out of 5 stars A great book providing sound grappling applications 29 April 2002
By A Customer
Format:Paperback
Machado has succeeded where other grappling books have failed, he has provided an easy to understand book of grappling techniques, advanced and basic, with easy to follow pictures. The book is divided into sections firstly an explanation on the science of submission, then sections on arm locks, leg locks, and chokes. What impressed me most about the book though was the inclusion of a 'without the gi' section, this has been neglected by so many but is vital to the modern world of street fighting and 'no holds barred' competitions. Machado also demonstrates some take-down combinations, and all moves are shown through step by step diagrams. The only fault with the book is that the pictures are in black and white. A must for any martial art's practioner wishing to improve their grappling.

1.0 out of 5 stars Not acceptable quality 4 Jan 2004
By G. Yam
Format:Paperback
Terrible, I'm afraid. Years ago, books of this quality were acceptable, and the norm for martial arts. Fortunately, things have moved on, and in the world of BJJ, some of the best produced books around are available.

This is definetely not one of them. Black and white photos have been the bane of judo books for years now, and although most photos have the fighters wearing different colour jackets, inexplicably, in one chapter, they are both wearing white - making identification very difficult.

The descriptions are not good. The comments run: "shift your weight....complete the lock" and that's it.

The techniques described are armlocks, leglocks and chokes. Hardly the essence of BJJ - there are no sweeps, controls, escapes or throws.

Most of the text of the first chapter is in an interview Rigan gave to Grappling magazine, and the rest of the book reads like the technique section of said magazine.

There are two books that are light years ahead of this - Brazilian Jiu-jitsu by Royler and Renzo, and Black Belt Techniques by Rigan's brother, Jean-Jacques.

Jean-Jaques's book is everything that this book isn't. Buy "Black Belt Techniques" and not this.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the best I have seen 27 Jun 2002
By A. M
Format:Paperback
I am not a student of any particular martial art, but instead prefer to learn techniques from many different ones. This book was perfect for me as it does not assume you know a lot about jiu-jitsu, apart from basics like the guard position. Some of the moves and techniques in this book, such as the basic choke, I found I knew already from a different martial art, so there is an element of crossover between different arts. One excellent aspect in particular is the inclusion of a 'without gi' secion, demonstrating techniques whilst wearing normal clothing.

If you are interested in gaining a good knowledge of basic moves, techniques, etc. from jiu-jitsu to use as either self-defense or to further your knowledge, then this book is for you.

It is one of the more affordable books, yet still is in the league of Gracie jiu-jitsu and more expensive books.

5.0 out of 5 stars Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu for all martial artists 5 Jan 2003
Format:Paperback
Finally, a book that can help martial artists learn how to grapple for self-defence.

Machado Jiu-Jitsu (an off-shoot of the legendary Gracie Jiu-Jitsu) is very highly regarded for its simplicity and effectiveness.

This book demonstrates how to escape from dangerous positions and holds. How to counter attacks from punches and kicks. How to apply submission holds, such as chokes, armlocks, leg locks and strangles.

If you already study Jiu-Jitsu, this book is an excellent addition to your library. If you don't study grappling or self-defence...this book MAY get you out of deep trouble one day!
