I came to this book through a fascination with the subject of contemporary art and how it seemes to skirt around everyday life instead of really engaging it.
Kaprow's texts are illuminating and inspiring in their frank lucidity and down-to-earth nature. He, quite literally, spilits art down the middle- seperating the traditions of bourgoise object-making from the pure experinces of everyday life that fall outside of the gallery space but well inside of realms of 'art'.
Kaprow follows Dewey in opening up the whole world as a space for art without ever managing to sound dreamy, fanciful or unrealistic. Clear examples are provided from Kaprow's own catalog alongside fascinating examples of his subject that are little less than revelatory in their ability to clear away centuries of rhetoric from the field of art.
After reading this book i found myself at a loss. Lost was the need to accept the status of 'art' for myself, my 'works' or my life. This book helped me realise that one can still be an artist, and feel fulfilled, as a care-worker, a teacher, or a gardener......
