Most Helpful Customer Reviews

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful By Nikica Gilic on 6 Mar. 2011
Format: Audio CD
Fabulous jazz giants, recorded live and swinging, in various combinations:
the collective personell
Louis Armstrong (tp, vo), Roy Eldridge (tp), Jack Teagarden (tb, vo), Barney Bigard (cl), Coleman Hawkins (ts), Art Tatum, Teddy Wilson (p), Red Norvo, Lionel Hampton (vb); Al Casey (g); Oscar Pettiford (b); Sid Cattlet (dm), Billie Holiday, Mildred Bailey(vo)...
If you liked those JATP concerts, you're sure to love this one! Plenty of fire and strong instrumental solos, with occasional vocals to sweeten the deal.
The personell list is complete, there are few interesting photos (some of them maybe even taken on the event itself), while the lack of liner notes shouldn't make you miss on this historical but timeless music (with traces of be-bop on Hawk's "Mop Mop" if you can believe it)...

The quality of the recording is quite normal for 1944 live recordings (actually, I've heard worse)...

For all classic, New Orleans, swing and mainstream jazz fans out there!

Jazz Must have in any collection 10 Jun. 2004
By Joe NYC - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
This recording is what can be expected for a 1944 recording. The music is sometimes briefly intruded upon by an announcer who felt obligated to identify a soloist in the middle of a song. But this is a rare opportunity to hear many jazz masters of the 1940s in a jam session atmosphere, including Louis Armstrong, Jack Teagarden, Lionel Hampton, Coleman Hawkins, Roy Eldridge, and Red Norvo, to name a few. but with that said it doesn't make a difference. These are the GIANTS of jazz. It's a MUST have for any serious jazz collection. It really is.
Great jazz, bad recording. 28 Feb. 2009
By R. Kerr - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
I would have given 5 stars if the reproduction had been better but nevertheless, this disc is certainly worth having just to hear those great jazz musicians of the past and who made such an impact on jazz for all time. It must have been a fantastic concert to sit through. I would guess that the intruding announcer is Willis Conover of 'Voice of America' fame.
