I'm a big fan of ESPN's '30 for 30' series. Hannah Storm's entry into the series, 'Unmatched', has a notably different feel than the other entries in this impressive slate of films. It's relaxed, conversational and unscripted. It has no narration or voice-over. And, most notably, no third-party is brought in to offer 'expert' commentary on the protagonists or the events. It's simply Chris Evert and Martina Navratilova talking about their deep and enduring friendship.
Filmmakers (and twin sisters) Lisa Lax and Nancy Stern Winter of Lookalike Productions have set a warm, comfortable tableau - Natalie Merchant songs, seashore house, walks on the beach, early morning coffee and robes - that help convey the intimacy and casualness of the relationship. These are two people - so different in upbringing and public perception - who are very clearly in each other's lives on a regular basis. They have an intimacy - shorthand language, filling in stories the other starts - that cannot be faked. That these two could battle on the court so many times and retain this relationship is a testament to their characters.
Hannah Storm made this movie happen. Though she probably cringes at being called a pioneer, that's what she is. She was only 26 when she began handling nightly sports anchoring duties for CNN (back when it was trying to compete with ESPN). Those of us living on the West Coast at the time were fortunate to see her most weekday nights. Her 20+ year career in sports and morning news has fostered a generation of women anchors. During her lengthy tenure at NBC Sports, she built a relationship with Chris Evert. That relationship is bedrock upon which 'Unmatched' was built. Evert was, in turn, able to convince Navratilova that this was the person to handle the story right. Additionally, Lisa Lax was a segment producer for NBC Sports during Ms. Storm's time there.
When you take a look at how Hannah Storm's fingerprints are all over this work, there's no better definition of what a producer does to bring a project like this from idea to reality.
