Children's animated adventure featuring the voice talents of Brendan Fraser, Rob Corddry and William Shatner. On planet Baab, Gary Supernova (voice of Corddry) is head of mission control at the Baabian Aeronautics and Space Administration (BASA), while his younger and more charismatic brother Scorch (Fraser) is the planet's most famous astronaut. The difference between the brothers is vast, and even Gary's son Kip (Jonathan Morgan Heit) favours his uncle over his father. However, when a failed rescue mission results in Scorch being held captive on planet Earth at the infamous Area 51 by Agent Shanker (Shatner), it's left up to Gary to save the day. Can he succeed in saving his brother and change his son's opinion of him?

Escape from Planet Earth pretty much passed the radar on its initial release, and has been regarded fairly negatively by critics and audiences. However, it is actually a fairly satisfactory movie which is undemanding and has some good fun moments.

The story focuses on two alien brothers, one the computer nerd, the other a dashing hero who sets off to the nearest planet (called the Daark Planet but which we soon find is our Earth). Predictably he crashes in Area 51 and is picked up by a corrupt general who has kidnapped other aliens who have crashed there in the past. The nerdy brother sets off on the rescue mission.

The only real down side to the story is that it has all been done before, but the animation looks good, the characters are fun, and the voices including Brendan Fraser, Jessica Alba and William Shatner as the baddie sound like they're having a good time and not just doing it for the money.

It may not be one to watch frequently but young children should find it fun and it's not one that adults are going to want to switch off asap. Give it a go!

Scorch (Brendan Fraser) is a muscle headed alien action hero astronaut. His brother Gary (Rob Corddry) is the brains of the two and monitors Scorch in mission control with the help of his computer Mr. James Bing, a take off on the name James Bond and not James Blish as I had hoped. Scorch's latest mission is to go to "The Dark Planet" (Earth). It gets its name because aliens go there and never return.

It is a trap and Scorch gets captured in Area 51 with the other missing aliens. Nerdy Gary sets out to rescue Scorch and the other aliens from a diabolical human.

The film missed its mark at creating a satire of other films. In one scene you hear someone yelling "James! Cameron!" Something you might expect in a film with blue aliens. The Narlacks are akin to Morlocks.

It is a movie the kids should enjoy and one you will get bored with about the time of the alien food fight. On a kids scale, "Wreak-It-Ralph" is far better. This rates down there with "Frankenweenie".

This film is an 89 minute promo for the 7-11 Big Gulp.

Andrew’s Blu-ray Review – More often than not, when a movie is released in the 3D format, you'll read a review that says the additional dimension adds nothing to one's enjoyment.

Really enjoyed the film and loved how the brothers are so protective with each, great family film. Good to be in mission control. Enjoyed it so much I couldn't stop watching the one where one looks like a rat but not, very funny, couldn't stop laughing with his one liners where he's going to miss this planet and all of a sudden the ship is shoot at and then he says "I hate this planet" oh dear laugh out loud! Fantastic family film.

Despite a pretty starry voice cast, including Brendan Fraser as lunk-headed but likeable space adventurer Scorch Supernova, Sarah Jessica Parker as the resourceful Kina, wife to the film’s protagonist, William Shatner as boo-hiss villain General Shanker Saunderson, and Jessica Alba as Lena, Scorch’s boss, Escape from Planet Earth seems to have been a surprisingly low-key animated movie, which is a shame as it’s vibrant, colourful, and great fun. The film never takes itself too seriously and has an animation style, that while perhaps lacking the sophistication of your average Disney/Pixar offering, is perfectly in keeping with the intensely effervescent tone of this hugely refreshing spin on the now standard ‘Men in Black versus aliens’ template.
