Amazon.co.uk Review

The Monkey Island tales jumped onto our screens a long time ago and charmed us with intriguing storylines and chirpy dialogue. Now after a wait that seems like an eternity, Guybrush Threepwood and his trusty band of friends are back in the fourth instalment, Escape from Monkey Island.

Carrying on where Curse of Monkey Island left off, Escape from Monkey Island starts with Guybrush and his now-wife Elaine Marley-Threepwood, The Governor of the Tri-islands, returning back to the peaceful island of Mêlée, only to find that not all is what it seems, and while they have been battling the high seas, the evil villain Charles L. Charles has plotted to take over the islands.

All sounds hectic stuff, and you would be right in thinking so, but Escape from Monkey Island is not about being hectic, so sit back, take a sip of that tea you've got next to the computer and let's take it easy.

For those not aware of the series, Monkey Island is your average point-and-click game: search around, ask some questions, pick up some stuff, ask some more questions and so on and so on, but where Escape from Monkey Island differs is in the execution.

With its superb 3-D graphics--the others didn't have 3-D graphics--that lusciously depict the Tri-island area, the graphics are the first thing that will catch you eye. Couple this with a witty, clever and at times wonderful script and you've got a game that will have you chuckling out loud as Guybrush spins puns, jokes and insults aplenty.

If you are a fan of the point-and-click genre, or the Monkey Island series for that matter, then this is definitely going to be your cup of tea with intriguing challenges and humour you have come to appreciate from a game like this.

If, however, like a lot of people, you are wary of point-and-click games, this is the perfect starting point, with the game slowly easing you into the wonderful world that is Monkey Island. --Stuart Miles

Product Description

Escape from Monkey Island continues in the hilarious tradition of its critically hailed and award-winning predecessors, The Secret of Monkey Island, Monkey Island 2: Le Chuck's Revenge and The Curse of Monkey Island. Developed by the team who created LucasArts' irreverent classic Sam and Max Hit the Road, Escape features an original cinematic story full of drama, intrigue and of course, side-splitting humour. The game is highlighted by hundreds of challenging puzzles, set amid dozens of rich and brilliantly rendered backgrounds.

Guybrush Threepwood, Elaine Marley-Threepwood, Stan of Stan's Previously Owned Vessels, and the other bizarre characters from the beloved, anachronistic Monkey series come back to PC shores.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great! I'm a devoted MI Fan!!, 15 Feb 2003
Brilliant game, but doesn't quite match up to CMI, Curse of Monkey Island. It's excellent in many ways and should be bought by all adventure gamers. The only draw-back is the so called 'ancient art' of Monkey Kombat. The only words that can truly describe this process are; Profoundly Irritating and an utter waste of time. If you have the patience to see it through to the end as I did, you'll feel all the better for beating it, and the ending is pretty good. Herman Toothrot comes out with a blinder of a plot twist though! A must buy!

3.0 out of 5 stars Good...but not AS good, 27 Dec 2001
By Curtis Allen "capndred" (Birmingham England) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I've loved the Monkey Island games for years. I've played each of 1,2, and 3 dozens of times and still find new things in them occassionly!
Monkey Island 4 fights like a cow though!
There are some fresh jokes and humour in them, but the game seems too smug and far to content to think it is funny simply to refer back to the other games and after a while it gets tedious. I think I just got fed up with the game's whole smugness. For a new player it may well be a complete put-off. If I remember correctly, it's never actually explained why LeChuck and the Marleys have been so inextricably linkedfor years in the past games.(I also think Guybrush now seems to realise he's a tad pathetic - he was funnier when he didn't)
Secondly, the puzzles aren't quite as logical as in the previous three games and too many rely on mindless repitition. There's one really good example but I can't remember it now. At that point I had to use a game guide because although I'd actually thought of the solution to the problem, I'd thought "surely the game doesn't expect me to just keep doing that over and over" so I hadn't.
Last gripe - In MI2 (my fave game ever) when you got Captain Dread's ship, there were ever so many puzzles you could be trying to solve at once and if you tired of one, you could go somewhere else. MI4, moreso than the other games, seems to push you from one place to the next with no sense of freedom.
Don't get me wrong - those were mostly comparisons and I actually like this game - I enjoyed most of the puzzles (Monkey Kombat excluded), I found it funny, and I did enjoy many of the references back to the other MIs and to see old characters like Stan, Murray, and Herman(and in 3D as well!). I wish LeChuck had more appearances though. I just don't think this game is as good as the others. If you like the other MIs, buy this. If you don't know the other MIs - play them first, then buy this. If you don't like the other MIs, stay well away!

2.0 out of 5 stars By far the funniest, but also the least challenging..., 26 Jan 2001
By Christopher Morris (Durham, england) - See all my reviews
I unfortunatly completed this game within three days of opening the box!!! Three days solid playing admittedly, but it still wasn't as hard as any of the other monkey island adventures...unfortunatly.

The point and click interface has been replaced by a clever little joystick interface. This sometimes made guybrush difficult to control as when the camera angle changed he would suddenly walk in the opposite direction!!!

although the onre liners and jokes were of the highest standard, the overall game was far more simplistic than the others and the fans of the old games will be dissapointed with the final version
