This autobiography by Robin Maugham , nephew of famous
author Somerset Maugham , is written in an honest ,
self deprecating and very eloquent tone . Maughams'
account gives the reader an original and very intimate
view behind the curtain of an aristocratic and politically
very influential English family.
Maughams' father was Chamberlain and confidant to
Winston Churchill . Maugham recounts his childhood
development , his delicate yet steadfast demeanor
and his troubled
relationship with his authoritarian father .
As Maugham matured he came to terms with his homosexuality
and his famous and incongruous relative , Somerset Maugham .
Robin Maugham also served proudly and with distinction in
the English military , a period of his life
in which Maugham showed true bravery and compassion .
The pace of this autobiography is more
allegro than andante ; never lagging and
always engrossing . The scope is very wide
yet very well focused .
In my opinion this is a wonderful work , and
in keeping with Maughams' character ,
is very brave and forthright .
