Excellent source book for experienced GMs, 11 Jan 2011
This review is from: Escape from Innsmouth (Paperback)
Escape from Innsmouth is primarily a sourcebook, but also contains 3 full scenarios plus numerous scenario ideas.
The product is excellent. An A3 fold out players map, plus detailed descriptions of hundreds of locations within the cursed town mean that it is rich with detail. Many NPCs have great character portraits, which I like because I usually scan in and enlarge NPC portraits from scenarios to use as player handouts. There's also sections that describe both the full history of Innsmouth and the "generally accepted" history. These are useful for providing players with information as a result of library research or general investigation.
The 3 scenarios are also very good, but will need some planning on the part of the GM in order to insert them into a campaign since (with the exception of the first - 'The Crawford Inheritance') they don't easily stand alone. Also, I think most GMs will probably want to run more scenarios than just the three in the book so it's probably worth getting 'Before the Fall' and/or writing some yourself. The section at the end with scenario ideas has given me lots of inspiration.
The third scenario, 'The Raid on Innsmouth' is a semi-narrative style epic that allows the players to participate in a massive government raid on the town. By it's very nature, this scenario would probably have to be the last one you do in that place in it's current form. In my own campaign I'm working up towards running this sometime in the future.
My only misgivings about this pack is that actually running adventures in Innsmouth can be quite tricky. You can guarantee that all your players are either going to know already, or work out very quickly, what the "secret" of Innsmouth is. As a result they're consequently on "full alert". I had to be quite inventive to find ways of stranding my players in Innsmouth overnight!
As a GM you have to put a lot of work into building up the atmosphere e.g. don't make it obvious when an NPC looks a bit "fishy" and make normal humans seem suspect as well. To really get the best out of this book, you need to work hard on the role playing and NPC/Character interaction rather than action/combat.
In summary, I think this is an excellent source book and one you really must have if you're considering running any Innsmouth adventures (e.g. those from "Before the Fall"), but this is best suited to experienced GMs.
