5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent 4 Aug 2002
By A Customer
Format:VHS Tape
This is the most realistic Holocaust movie I have seen. It is an incredible movie and the story will grip you. From the start of the movie it shows everyday life for the inmates in the Sobibor death camp, most are immediately killed upon arrival but the strong men and women are kept to work for the Nazis and Ukranian guards, you are kept usually if you have a skill the Nazis want. Throughout the film the skilled Jews get together to plan an escape but they have no knowledge of military and they have never killed anybody ,thats when the help comes from a Russian P.O.W. who is sent to the camp. Together with his military experience and the knowledge of the camp from the Jews they plan there escape and execute it by killing numerous SS and Ukranian guards, in time intervals. This is a true story.

5.0 out of 5 stars Absolutely amazing 6 Sep 2004
Format:VHS Tape
I first saw this movie, when it was screened on British television. At that time, I was an impressionable teenager, who didn't know much about the Holocaust or what really happened in the death camps. The performances by Alan Arkin, Rutger Hauer, Joanna Pacula et al, were compelling and had me on edge for the entire movie. I again saw Escape from Sobibor, purely by chance, in October 1995. Little did I realise, that I was actually viewing it again on the 50th anniversary of the revolt. What the Jewish prisoners, and all those who escaped, went through, to gain freedom, was amazing. This movie will have you on edge the entire time.

Hope in the face of adversity. A true story. The basic will to live that is in us all, against insurmountable odds and apparent hopelessness

5.0 out of 5 stars Escape from sobibor 6 Feb 2004
By A Customer
This film shows what life must have been like in a death camp rather than a concentration camp. Here people, both guards and inmates, worked in a space devoted entirely to the implementation of the final solution - remember this camp was one of five set up purely for this reason. The day to day lives of the inmates is captured perfectley but also the film gives an insight into the lives of the camp staff. In one scene, for example, the guards have a heated discussion about the camp and their specific role in its running. Some are clearly concerned about the morality of their actions. Historically, this is absoultely accurate. There were good and bad people on all sides. Its good to see an attempt at looking at day to day events of life in a death camp rather than just on the main issues of the holocaust.

5.0 out of 5 stars Outstanding, Truthful and Very Real 30 Nov 2003
Format:VHS Tape
I read the book which is excellent and the film captures the utter tragedy of these Jews from Poland and Holland in a Nazi totalitarian extermination camp. They needed the military training and discipline of the Russian POW soldiers in order to focus their plans for escape. When the breakout occurs after the careful but messy assassination of many of the SS superiors, the film shows the complete panic and chaos of their flight from the camp. If the film had been a Stallone epic then all of the Ukrainian guards in the watchtowers would have been taken out and everyone would have been saved. Instead, the film sticks to the truth of what happened and shows that some of these starving souls were transfixed and couldn't move and that so many fleeing were machinegunned by the surviving guards.
Rutger Hauer and Alan Arkin are brilliant. This film and book should never be allowed go out of print, because evil is always with us.

5.0 out of 5 stars Harrowing but Brilliant 10 Jun 2011
Format:DVD|Verified Purchase
I have seen this movie twice, once when I was a teenager, then about 10 years later, but still remember vivadly everything about it. The main family that stick in my mind, if the ones standing on the ramp and a young man volunteers himself and his brother as gold-smiths and his father, but the guard just pushes his dad back and says "forget about him". As these two boys are only young, they have no idea what is going on until the youngest is sent a message and ends up seeing just what has happened to his family, this scene will haunt me forever and the reaction of his brother. A very harrowing movie but brilliant in the fact that bravery and humantiy can see you through.

5.0 out of 5 stars Escape from Sobibor 31 Mar 2003
By A Customer
Format:VHS Tape
This film moves away from the pure Spielberg realism of Schindler's List but manages nevertheless to capture the everyday horror of a Nazi death camp during World War Two. Filmed in a mock-up recreation of the original camp, ( the original was destroyed by the SS after the escape ) the film deals not only with the realities of the mass murder of the Holocaust but also with the power of individuals to band together and triumph in the face of the seemingly impossible. An excellent, if lesser known testement to the horrors of the Holocaust.

A sad reminder of how humans can treat each other. The decades might change but man has not. A must see film with dramatic and realistic scenes. Well worth the money.
