In the future, crime is out of control and New York City is a maximum security prison. Grabbing a bargaining chip right out of the air, convicts bring down the President's plane in bad old Gotham. Gruff Snake Plissken, a one-eyed warrior new to prison life, is coerced into bringing the President, and his cargo, out of this land of undesirables. Kurt Russell puts his Disney days (he played the squeaky clean hero in such films as The Computer Wore Tennis Shoes, 1970) behind him as the nicest bad guy in the picture. All comic-book sensibilities and macho posturing, this is one of writer/director John Carpenter's better brainless escapades, brimming with snappy one-liners and explosive action scenes. However, the film lacks tension and some believability even within the realm of SF fantasy. Even when it fails to gel, though, it always manages to amuse, thanks in great part to a varied and unusual supporting cast (watch for Ernest Borgnine as a cabdriver and Isaac Hayes, one-time soul singer and now best known as South Park's chef, as The Duke of New York). Followed in 1996 by Carpenter's overdone and campy Escape from L.A. --Rochelle O'Gorman

Product Description

It is 1997 and Manhattan Island has been turned into a maximum security prison, due to the enormous rise in the crime rate. Drug-dealer Prospero (Isaac Hayes) and his cronies hold control of the entire area, making it the most inopportune spot for a plane carrying the US president to crashland. Eye-patched anti-hero Snake Plissken (Kurt Russell) is entrusted with the task of rescuing his country's leader. Followed by a belated sequel, 'Escape from LA', in 1996.

4.0 out of 5 stars "....President of what?" 25 Sep 2012
Escape From New York is, in my opinion, the perfect midnight movie. Now, I don't mean "Midnite Movie!" as in the sub-genre/label, for films from Eraserhead to Pink Flamingoes to Night of the Living Dead to Freaks...crazy, exciting and weird cult pictures.
No, I mean, a film you can watch in the middle of the night and it can quietly blow you away. Not only does almost every scene in this film take place at night (we briefly see morning, as I recall), but the film is VERY quiet, especially for an action film.
The opening theme, rendered in bombast in Escape from LA, here is slow and...well I can't describe it. It's not "plodding", or "driving" or "sad". It's just the Theme from Escape From New York. I love how it sounds, personally, and it perfectly sets the mood before the Jamie Lee Curtis-read prologue sets the scene.
I love the model effects used early on to show Manhattan as a prison (yes, like Carpenter's ASSAULT ON PRECINCT 13, the title is an absolute cheat when it comes to specifics, but c'mon). The panoramic cinemascope image of the Manhattan skyline, as grey and lifeless as the sky above it with no artifical light or power in evidence at all, is not easily forgotten. The skyscrapers are now giant tombstones for the American dream, with all the quiet and still bizarro architecture of an Alien landscape in a 1970s Sci-Fi picture. Truly a gloomy vision of this once prosperous city.

Pretty much uniquely for an American dystopian future, it is not "humanity", "man", "fate" or "God" that has doomed America - it is America herself; her proud Eagle, once a symbol of freedom, now only the emblem of a menacing, black clothed army in Police riot gear.

1.0 out of 5 stars Quality wise this is the worst blu ray i own 6 Oct 2008
The quality of this blu ray release is horrible.
There is a lot of damage on the negative used for the master. I have had the opportunity of comparing this with a version recorded from HDTV and there is an incredible difference both with regards to the print damage but also to the quality of the picture since this is an upscaled master and therefore not in true HD resolution. In one of the scenes I compared lee van cleef's gold bracelet. On this blu ray the bracelet just looks like a gold colored piece of string while on the HDTV version (that is only 720P) you can count each individual link on the bracelet. The HDTV version also lacks all the "print damage" that is evident on the master used for this "blu ray".
There is also a lot of edge enhancement going on in this master.
This release is an insult to blu ray owners and John Carpenter fans alike...
Personally I won't be buying any optimum blu rays since I feel that I have been swindled and cheated. If optimum makes good and releases a remastered blu ray I might forgive them.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great Purchase 12 Feb 2013
Format:DVD|Verified Purchase
Love this John Carpenter classic.
Purchased this primarily to get the commentary - by Carpenter and Kurt Russel & Debra Hill / Joe Alves. Really enjoyed them.

1.0 out of 5 stars Terrible 9 Aug 2008
By gaattc
This Blu-ray looks terrible. Edge enhancement (meaning halos around every person and object) is so strong that the film has a completely artificial, almost disconnected look (like printed from a collage made out of paper snippets). I feel double-crossed by Optimum and will be very careful with their future releases.

1.0 out of 5 stars Great movie, terrible blu-ray 13 Aug 2008
As a huge Carpenter fan I was looking forward to this disc. Sadly when I inserted it into my PS3 what I saw was deeply disappointing. The picture quality is absolutely dreadful, completely lacking in detail and riddled with masses of so called 'edge enhancement'. It looks like a bad DVD, and nothing like high-def.

The audio is better, but it certainly doesn't make up for the hopeless picture quality.

Also, the disc has a couple of extras but strangely none of them would work on my PS3. They just span the disc for a second then went back to the main menu. Seems somehow appropriate for this completely broken BD release.

By Mr Ghostface VINE VOICE
Well, I say Blu-ray "transfer" rather than Blu-ray "master" because I do not believe this is a high-definition master. The picture quality is atrocious, with cheap edge enhancement applied to the image in order to try to achieve a sharper image without paying for a proper HD master. Some SD masters look fine when upscaled on a good TV, but this supposed HD image actually looks vastly inferior to decent DVDs. If you like/love this film, as I do, then stick to your DVD of it. If you don't have it, either get the DVD or wait until the Blu-ray is reissued in a newer edition. To call this high definition is an insult to the format and even moreso to viewers like us whom the manufacturers seem to believe will buy anything they sell.

Avoid this release, but do try to see the movie.

4.0 out of 5 stars great show hey! 7 Oct 2007
By sean paul mccann VINE VOICE
released in 1981,escape from new york is a film with huge ideas and maybe not the budget to match those,a remake is being made, vast sums of money will be put into that, but can the atmosphere of this be recreated, somehow i doubt it.
Like i said, this isnt a vast budget,7 million dollars to be precise, but what an idea, the island of manhattan in new york is now a place where all the criminals serve their time,an utopia of sorts. The place is wall to wall with vermin so when the president crashes into the island,it doesnt look good for him.
So step up snake, played with menace by kurt russell,an anti-hero if ever there was one.A man that is being sent to the island to serve time,he is also an ex soldier,a man with a past, that everyone seems to know,he is offered a pardon if he gets the president in 23 hours, fail that and he dies, simple as that really.
The film is nervy and packed with tip top action,a good support cast doesnt hurt either, lee van cleef plays a warden of sorts with bad attitude, donald pleasance plays the president with an english accent, odd! and isaac hayes, yes, hayes of south park chef fame and soul legend plays the duke, the villain of all villains,he has a limo on the island with chandeleers as lights, class touch.
The film is dark and funny in places too and few in this film can be deemed as good, bleak in places but top notch entertainment.
