Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

In a world dominated by grim and gritty console games, it's difficult to find a madcap adventure about the triumphs of a goofball would-be pirate. Yet that's exactly what we have in Escape from Monkey Island. This PC port follows the latest misadventures of Guybrush Threepwood as he tries to make sense of his ridiculous world; the PC-style gameplay consists of conversing, exploring, and lots of puzzle-solving; gamers who lack patience or who loathe Myst-like puzzles might want to skip this game, but they'll be missing out on one of the most unique console experiences on the market.

The game's forte is clearly its style. Its dialogue, while sometimes lengthy, is often witty and boisterously entertaining. Its characters and environments are bright and vibrant. Its puzzles--in which you often match wacky objects in bizarre situations--are straight out of a Looney Tunes cartoon. Few games can match Escape from Monkey Island's humour, and those that can aren't on the PlayStation 2.

Although the character designers and animators were able to achieve a playful style, some of the series' personality was lost in the translation from 2-D sprite-based graphics to 3-D polygons. Still, there's really nothing else like it on the PS2. Gamers looking for something different, or wanting to take a break from saving the world from cataclysmic menaces, should give this game a shot. --Raymond M. Padilla

Product Description

Escape from Monkey Island continues in the hilarious anachronistic tradition of its award-winning PC predecessors, The Secret of Monkey Island, Monkey Island 2: Le Chuck's Revenge and The Curse of Monkey Island. Escape features an original cinematic story full of drama, intrigue and, of course, sidesplitting humor.

The story follows wannabe pirate Guybrush Threepwood and his new bride Elaine Marley-Threepwood. Upon their return to Mêlée Island, of which Elaine is the elected governor, the couple find out that Elaine has been declared dead and that her office has been usurped by a slick--and strangely familiar--politician. Escape from Monkey Island is highlighted by hundreds of challenging puzzles, set amidst dozens of rich and brilliantly rendered backgrounds.

Escape from Monkey Island is a top game if anyone reads this you will want to buy it. Escape from Monkey Island is based on a not so swashbuckling pirate named Guybrush Threepwood. As with the other monkey island games it's a real puzzler from the first to the last puzzle. In Escape from Monkey Island you will really have to rack your brains. This is the first and sadly maybe the last Monkey Island game that is in the series of four to be in 3-D it has lush graphics, beautiful backgrounds and some hilarious charcters. This game will last you a long time, a good 25-30 hours. The controls are pretty good and you can save anywhere you want. I think this is a brilliant game and so do other customers on Amazon but I would try to complete the other three before you begin. Top marks from me! P.S my favourite charcter is Otis.

5.0 out of 5 stars "I'm Guybrush Threepwood, and I want to be a pirate...", 2 July 2001
This review is from: Escape From Monkey Island (PS2) (Video Game)
It's a monkey island game. Need I say any more?

Obviously, yes. It's fair to say that LucasArts have dominated the adventure game market for the last...ooh...eleven years? Their hilarious games have had millions rolling on the floor in hysterics for years now. On the PC. This is the first 'Monkey' game confined to console, and it works very well. The graphics are in functional 3D- not as good as the BRILLIANT cartoon graphics of Curse of Monkey Island, but good nevertheless. Guybrush is still played by the superb Dominic Armato ("Iron Maiden! Excellllent!) and the Monkey Island humour has never died. With brilliant overly-sinister Australians, monkeys (More than you can shake a voodoo doll at, apparantly) and loads of knowing in-jokes to the first three games, this is a hearty dose of refreshment to a console where you either (a) drive very fast and very dangerously OR (b) butcher things. The replacement of Ron Gilbert (Monkeys 1 + 2) by Max Stemmle and Sam Clark (Sam and Max hit the road) really hasn't harmed the series, and restaurants such as "PLANET THREEPWOOD" and "STARBUCCANEERS" takes the Monkey Island series into the 21st century with a bang. It's a hard game, too, harder than any others. This will last you. If you don't spoil it with a walkthrough (For your sake, don't..) then you'll get at least 30 hours out of this.

A word of advice, though- play the first three games beforehand (You can get them in a boxset...), or you will NOT get some of the humour.

Now if only I could combine the prosthetic feet with the duck...

4.0 out of 5 stars Monkey-tastic, 18 Dec 2001
This review is from: Escape From Monkey Island (PS2) (Video Game)
The latest in the Monkey Island series and a fresh lick of paint, some wacky new characters, and some extra islands to explore and enjoy.

So what do you need to know if you are thinking of buying this game? First, if you don't know anything about it, then its a click and point type adventure game. Yawn.

Dont run off yet - even if you aren't a great fan, you should at least check out MI, which is probably one of the strongest in its class. It manages this by its off-the-wall humour, and attention to detail.

Unlike 'Brand X', here you get a much deeper level of interaction, which in turn gives you much more reason to want to keep trying - how else are you ever going to figure out that the artificial skin goes on the open manhole?

And thats probably where MI has always failed, there can sometimes be such a complete lack of logic between what you are trying to achieve and what items you have to hand that frustration can soon set in. It's only the fun of finding out what Elaine will say when you try poking her with your sword (ahem) that keeps you going sometimes.

The latest MI does keep the spirit of the previous games going, and although its gonna help to have played the previous games (you'll get much more of the in jokes!) its not the end of the world if you haven't.

That's about all I can tell you about the game without decending into Monkeyisms and confusing the hell out of all you non-MI players.

If you don't know anything about MI, I'd suggest hiring it out for a couple of days (if you can) before you even think of buying it - if you dont get the humour, this will be a huge dissapointment.

If you're a fan, why are you even bothering reading this? Get to the shops now and part with your hard earned cash (you know its the only way).
