Product Description

From Amazon.co.uk

One of Clint Eastwood's two most important filmmaking mentors was Don Siegel (the other was Sergio Leone), who directed Eastwood in Dirty Harry, Coogan's Bluff, Two Mules for Sister Sara and this enigmatic, 1979 drama based on a true story about an escape from the island prison of Alcatraz. Eastwood plays a new convict who enters into a kind of mind game with the chilly warden (Patrick McGoohan) and organises a break leading into the treacherous waters off San Francisco. As jailbird movies go, this isn't just a grotty, unpleasant experience but a character-driven work with some haunting twists. --Tom Keogh

Product Description

Classic prison break drama starring Clint Eastwood. Frank Morris (Eastwood) is a prisoner on the legendary Alcatraz island, a place where it is said that all attempts at escape are futile, but he refuses to believe the hype and together with a group of dedicated inmates, begins drawing up the plans which will eventually lead to the only successful escape attempt in the prison's history.

4.0 out of 5 stars Can he escape? Of course he can... 27 April 2008
Clint Eastwood takes the role of Frank Morris a very intelligent bank robber who supposedly escaped from Alcatraz. The film depicts Morris planning his way out (escaping through the cell wall with a pair of nail clippers). Once through this he as able to work out where the best place would be to escape from as well as construct a raft of some description and create a dummy to place in his bed so guards would not notice his abscence. Undeniable brilliance. Whilst Eastwood is without doubt the star and performs well I always feel that Patrick McGoohan as the Warden is most intense. The film wouldn't work without him. A great performance in my eyes. The bottom line is that this film is fascinating, enjoyable and entertaining. Not a bad combination.

4.0 out of 5 stars Nice picture, lacking in extras. 6 July 2013
Format:Blu-ray|Verified Purchase
The film itself is enthralling and Eastwood is watchable as ever, giving more with the raising of an eyebrow than many actors can deliver in several lines.

The Blu-Ray is a really good picture upgrade, it looks nice and clean and is a serious upgrade from the DVD. Not sure why some reviewers are a bit down on the picture, I ran it through a decent 42" HD TV and it looked great.

Sound is nothing to write home about, claims to be in TrueHD but is no different to standard DVD and did not challenge my sound system at all but no loss in a film like this.

The only dissapointment is the complete lack of extras. In the modern era you expect more from Blu-Ray but for the right price this is a good buy, and given the lack of 'high profile' it's unlikely we will see a special edition any time soon.

5.0 out of 5 stars 'NOBODY ESCAPES' 16 Jun 2013
By rbmusicman TOP 500 REVIEWER
Format:Blu-ray|Verified Purchase
'Clint Eastwood' gives a gritty and convincing performance as bank
robber 'Frank Morris'
He's sent to serve out his remaining term of imprisonment at the
infamous 'Alcatraz' penitentiary.
'Frank' has a history of escaping prison, however 'Alcatraz' has a
reputation to uphold......nobody escapes.
compelling viewing.
the film is based on factual accounts leading up to the escape.
also filmed on location at 'San Francisco's' notorious prison.
unlike many of the Blu-ray transfers of 'Clint's' movies some effort
has been made in terms of picture quality, though still some ways short of
what I believe could be achieved when the film company's have the will to do so.

5.0 out of 5 stars Escape From Alcatraz 4 May 2005
I'm not that much of a film buff to know whether Escape from Alcatraz was the first of the great prison break movies, but certainly looking at films like Shawshank Redemption, The Green Mile or Lock Up you can certainly see the influence that this film has had. For that reason alone you could probably rightly call this excellent film a classic.
Clint Eastwood makes the film his own with a majestic powerful performance, letting his acting do the talking rather than relying on dialogue. In fact the whole film is quite light on dialogue, instead the tension and the frustration of prison life is shown through the actions of the inmates.
Great performances also from Paul Benjamin as the librarian English, Larry Hankin as Charlie Butts and Patrick McGoohan as the almost humanless warden.
Just one of those films that you really just "have" to have seen.

2.0 out of 5 stars Disappointing Blu-Ray 8 Jun 2013
Format:Blu-ray|Verified Purchase
This review is about the PRODUCT, and not the FILM.

Well to be quite honest, I am very disappointed with this release. At no point during the film are you convinced you are watching a "high definition" transfer, as it is not that much superior to the DVD release. Now, there will be some who would argue of the films age (1979), but that is no excuse, considering many films which are much older than this look stunning on Blu-ray.

At 07:57 after the guard says "welcome to Alcatraz", there is a flash of lightning followed by a shot of Clint standing in his cell, supposedly naked. On the DVD at the exact same spot you can see he is in fact wearing jeans in this shot. So, by that conclusion you have to think this Blu-ray is cropped, as it does not show the full image. There are small sections of the film where fuzzy blotches are evident. For instance, at 10:08 look at the guard on the right-hand side of the screen - his black uniform is very pixelated.
If that wasn't bad enough, there are absolutely NO EXTRAS - not even a trailer.

Clint Eastwood and Don Siegel take a break from the guns and police drama, this time the partnership turns toward the telling of a true story, Frank Morris the man who managed to escape from Alcatraz.(and with his co-escapees) were the only ones to manage that feat.

Based on the book Escape from Alcatraz by J. Campbell Bruce, the film transfers to celluloid very well with a good screenplay and cast. Eastwood fits into his usual quiet and considered acting role which works well for the film. Evidently the real Morris was an intelligent man, hence his escape plan that was very carefully prepared and successful.

Siegel directs well, and whilst it could be argued Patrick McGoohan does overdo the somewhat cruel and harsh warden role a bit, the film is still an excellent production. Supporting cast includes Larry Hankin and Fred Ward. Keep an eye out for Danny Glover who has a role as fellow prisoner,

True stories tend to make good films and that's proven here. There is some debate as to the fate of the men who escaped, it does seem likely they probably didn't survive the cold weather and harsh water surrounding the prison (there are a few documentaries that are worth investigating about this) Even so the escape worked and not only made a good story in real life, it makes a good film for fans of the genre. Some minor flaws, but overall a winner and good to see Eastwood in one of his stronger screen roles which doesn't involve a Western or a gritty off the wall cop.
