Product Description

A collection of films starring Errol Flynn. Flynn made his starring debut in the classic swashbuckling adventure story, 'Captain Blood' (1935). He plays a surgeon wrongly imprisoned for helping rebels. Mr. Blood escapes and becomes a pirate in the Caribbean, before founding the 'Brotherhood of Buccaneers' to fight the villainous King James II. In 'Dodge City' (1939), Wade Hatton (Flynn) is a cattle buyer who soon makes a name for himself after arriving in the small frontier town of Dodge City. Wade not only helps catch cattle rustler Jeff Surrett (Bruce Cabot), but leads a covered wagon train to safety. However, this fails to impress the beautiful Abbie Irving (Olivia de Havilland), who blames Wade for the death of her brother in a stampede he accidentally started. When Wade discovers that Surrett has taken over Dodge in his absence, he puts on the sheriff's badge in an attempt to clean up the town. 'The Private Lives of Elizabeth and Essex' (1939) is a Hollywood history lesson detailing the doomed affair of Elizabeth I (Bette Davis) and Lord Essex (Flynn). In this version of events, Elizabeth is plagued with jealousy whenever the rakish Essex shows an interest in other women, and she eventually has him executed as a traitor. 'The Sea Hawk' (1940) is another swashbuckling sea adventure set on the Spanish Armada during Elizabeth's reign. Flynn leads the British against the Spaniards to a rousing score (nominated for Best Music Oscar) by Erich Wolfgang Korngold. 'They Died With Their Boots On' (1941) is an epic western chronicling the life and times of George Armstrong Custer (Flynn). Custer is the man in charge of the Seventh Cavalry, and when corrupt officials break a treaty with the Sioux Native Americans, it is up to Custer to protect the Dakota territory from attack. Finally, 'Dive Bomber' (1941) is an exciting aviation film about experiments which attempted to eliminate the dangerous phenomenon of pilot-blackout. The film was nominated for an Oscar for its camera work.

5.0 out of 5 stars vintage flynn. 29 May 2006
Format:DVD
unlike the region 2 release, this collection includes the feature-length documentary about errol flynn's life and career.

to me, this is the icing on the cake as well as a featurette on each of the films in the set.

i am also pleased to learn that "captain blood" has been fully restored to full length. previous video releases show the film to be heavily cut to about 95 minutes. this dvd is 114 minutes.

every film selected shows errol flynn at his best. i can think of other films of this period that should also have been included, but that is a mere quibble. the golden age of hollywood at its best.

This is a really good value for money set from Warner Brothers. It gives us six of Errol Flynn's best films (people will argue over the choices of film selected for inclusion, and which of Flynn's are his best, but I think the selections made are pretty good) in one easy package.

The six films are Captain Blood, Dodge City, The Private Lives of Elizabeth and Essex, The Sea Hawk, They Died With Their Boots On and finally Dive Bomber. Between them they run the gamut of the genres Flynn worked in - swashbuckler, romantic, westerns and war films, and shows off his range of talents. He buckles on his swash and romances his way across our screens for over eleven hours of action packed derring-do and adventures. It's entertainment of the highest order!

Each film is presented in a nicely restored print with a decent soundtrack. I do not know too much about the other films, but Captain Blood is definitely the longer 114 minute version rather than the shorter film more usually seen. Each disc is loaded with extras, including newsreels, cartoon shorts and makings of for each film. As with other WB releases of films from the period it is unclear what some of the extras actually have to do with the film. But if you're like me and get DVDs for the films and are not too worried about the fripperies then this is the ideal way to get hold of these films. Each film by itself would cost as much as this entire set, and the quality of the release in terms of remastering and picture quality is really top notch.

There are two normal DVD cases, each with three discs. The whole lot is collected into a sturdy card slip case, and looks quite elegant on the shelf.

It might be a bargain basement price, but it is a top quality release. Buy it, and allow yourself to be transported to a world where men were men, who had thrilling adventuresand always got the girl whilst dispatching the villains to satisfyingly sticky ends.

5.0 out of 5 stars Simply the best 17 Feb 2006
Format:DVD
The region two version of this set came out a few months ago here in France (see the French Amazon site), and is the same as the American set except that the French one includes the two disk set of The Adventures of Robin Hood. And quite simply it is a set that can't be beaten.

All the films are beautifully re-mastered, and it feels like you are seeing them for the first time. Each film comes with very informative documentaries, and a "night at the movies" feature, that attempts to re-create the programme you would have had if you had gone to see these films in the cinema 60+ years ago (cartoons, news-reels etc).

But it is for the films that you are buying this set, and they really present many of Flynns finest work. Robin Hood, Captain Blood, The Sea Hawk, Elizabeth and Essex, They died with their boots on, and Dodge City (but how Dive Bomber came to be included seems to be a mystery). This is a set you will never grow tired of. Each film being a time-less classic. And with many flynn classics not being here, I hope to see volume 2 coming out soon.

(The Region two French version contains all the films in English as well as French)

Edit...........

The French Region 2 release also includes the "Portrait of a Swashbuckler" documentary. And it is indeed excellent with a lot of interviews from those you expect (Olivia, his wives, daughters), and those you wouldn't (Burt Reynolds, Richard Dreyfus). It also contains an excellent selection of clips from Flynns films.
