Product Description

Product Description

I did nothing but dream about moving to Spain until another minute in London threatened to push me over the edge! Turning up in Madrid without a word of Spanish, I soon found a job, alluring intercambios, amazing journeys and wild fiestas. Then I met Marina, bought a scarily run-down flat in Lavapies, and got in with the in-laws! If I can do it, couldn't you?

4.0 out of 5 stars Thank you for this book, 1 Sep 2011

We foreigners who live in Spain (guiris), lap up the stories of our fellow exiles. Many are terrible (the writing as well as the story) but this is well written and a compelling story so thank you Ben.

What a fantastic read, Ben describes how fate took him to Spain when least expected, and where he created a new life; meeting a young Spanish girl and eventually getting married. This book is hard to put down, with a strong narrative and quite beautiful descriptions of Spanish customs and ways of life.

5.0 out of 5 stars I thought I'd just landed in the middle of Lavapies., 25 Dec 2011
This review is from: Errant in Iberia (Kindle Edition)
I mainly bought this book because I was curious to see how Spain was seen through British eyes. I have lived in London myself for quite a while now and, though I think I have gained enough distance from Spain to see what a visitor might see, I was curious about the book.

I really was very pleasantly surprised. It's a warm book; it's an honest book; it's a funny book.

If you know Madrid, you will love it. If you've never been there, it will give you a good idea what life might feel like as a visitor. It's also interesting to see the protagonist escape Madrid and his vision of some of Spain's traditions, such as the Fallas.

"I have yet to see anything in Spain quite so astonishing as the civic irresponsibilities that take place during Las Fallas. There is something wonderfully liberating about the whole thing, that makes you realise how much the British might benefit if the powers that be were just a little less up-tight about health and safety."
