Book Description

4 Aug 2011
The artistic and erotic impulses have gone hand in hand since humans first took up burnt sticks and clay to express their dreams and desires. Centuries of civilization have tried to contain this impulse in most cultures, with limited success. It seems that there has always been, and will always be an erotically driven element to human creativity. "Erotique" takes a colourful look at what erotic art has come to mean today. This high-quality publication showcases the finest examples from the worlds of illustration, pin-up, surreal, comic and modern art from the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. It will shed light on how erotic art has developed, its influences, and the cutting edge artists working in the field today, from Picasso's explicit sexual sketches to the 1960s pop art stylings of Allen Jones and West Coast king of cool Coop's notorious devil girls. "Erotique" brings together some of the very best examples from modern painting, sculpture, graphic design and new media. Everything you need to know about the masters of erotic art, and their rightful successors, is here.

4.0 out of 5 stars Hit and miss! 30 Sep 2013
Format:Hardcover|Verified Purchase
Overall, quite a good comprehensive volume of collected contemporary and period erotica - but, some does seem rather bland and mediocre, I have to say! For me, I'd hardly call Tracey Emins' contribution 'erotic'; they just look like doodles, same as Luciano Castelli's work - too slap-dash! Alison Watt's looks like . . .well . .nothing really. Picasso? Erotic? Hmm, did nothing for me!
Having said that though, there really is some cracking stuff in here - included are works by Brian Viveros, one of all-time favourites - Giger, Hajima Sorayama (cover art), Olivia De Berardinis & Isabel Samaras. There are also pieces by Magritte, Beardsley, Klimt, period Japanese and Euoropean art along with the dark distorted images of Otto Dix and Egon Schiele. Erotic art is, after all, personal choice, and one person's erotica is not necessarily anothers, so, give this volume of collected works a go. I do like the fact that each artist has a brief biog - helps to get a feel for their style, plus each chapter has a brief introduction. Overall, a good volume to own!
The book itself: well bound and a good size - fits nicely on my bookshelf!

I bought this book partly because the nature of the cover art suggested that the content was burlesque in nature. The adult nature of the artwork within was quite stronger and some of it I found difficult to keep looking at, to be honest with you. I wouldn't recommend this book for anyone below the age of eighteen. The book contains work from various artists and some of the artwork is homoerotic; the quality of the work is good and I would suggest this book for true open-minded art fans - one for the library but not for kids!

4.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful Art Book, just not a Photography Book however 19 Sep 2012
By Tim C - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover|Verified Purchase
Just got the book - this book covers erotic art from French impressionist ART to modern day.

The slight disappointment is the misleading cover (which is a great painting by Sorayama) - which would looked photographic and made me think it was this was a photography book.

I did enjoy the various interpretations of erotic ART, but in the end, this may not be a keeper for me. Just know what you are getting, that's all !

5.0 out of 5 stars All the Cover Promises, and More 6 Jan 2012

Masterpieces may be stretching it a bit - but the book is 9/10 on its way. The photos are stunning, the models are stunning and the photography doesn't give you that "Damn. College kids can get into anything nowadays," feeling. If I had one thing to tell you, it's to get your hands on some page markers Book Darts 50 Line Markers, as there will be pages you go back to again, and again. There are - within the hard covers of this book - some breathtaking photos, and easily being able to reference them is great.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Great Coffee Table Art Book 13 Mar 2012
By Rosalie Mcclung - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover|Verified Purchase
Stunning art and the text is interesting and even though there were some pieces that I wasn't particularly fond of, I found the explanations quite enlightening. The colors were absolutely stunning and anyone would be proud to place this hardcover art book on their coffee table. I especially liked the pinup art, and the Japanese works.

3.0 out of 5 stars Interesting, but not what I expected 3 Jan 2013
By jensenca1 - Published on Amazon.com

First I should admit that when I saw the phrase "erotic art" in the title, I thought photographs rather than illustrations/drawings, and this book most definitely contains the latter. Despite that, if more of the illustrations had been similar to the one on the cover, I would have been happier with the book as a whole. Unfortunately, many of the drawings are rather crude - I claim no expertise in the field of art, but I think it's rather a stretch to call very many of these drawings a "masterpiece." A more fitting title might be "history of erotic art."
