I'm slightly disappointed with this book, but only because it's not quite what I was expecting. I would have thought that, for a book on erotic manga, there would be much more technique tuition and a tight focus on how to draw intimate areas as well as couples engaging in sexual play.

Instead, this book is actually extremely coy. Focusing almost exclusively on women, the most explicit it gets is bare breasts and buttocks. It is divided into sections - including 'professions', 'horror' and 'fantasy' - and each section looks at particular stereotypical character, from sketch stage to finished art. As I said before, almost every drawing is of a woman, and 95% of the time she is on her own.

There are a few 'tips' which accompany each drawing - varying in helpfulness.

I gave this book 3 stars, but its usefulness to a reader really depends on what they're after. I wanted more instruction, more focus on anatomy and more couple interaction, so I feel a bit misled by the book's description. (Forget manga genitals, there's not even a kiss in this book!). However, if you draw/would like to draw rather soft-core porn ladies with large breasts, this would make a great reference book for your bookshelf.

Great book. 21 Aug 2007
Ive just received this and am already very impressed with the content and format of the book. I have several books on the same subject by Japanese authors and whilst they are good guides to the art of manga this book is in a separate class. I really think that this is a book for the more established artist as it does not give a great deal of time to technique. It does focus on theme, composition and lighting. The illustrations are excellent and they are presented in an uncluttered way which i found quite inspiring. This is definitely good value for money considering the cost and the number of pages. A very good companion book to The Monster Book of Manga.

Having developed a fondness for art over the past couple of years, it was only recently that I first turned to my hand to the comic book- after Reverend Dalton encouraged me to join his new cartoon drawing class. Having previously been thrown out of his life drawing course (see The Nude:: Understanding the Elements of Life Drawing (Art of Drawing)) it was a welcome opportunity to return to creative ways. Initially, I had tended to produce rather traditionally lighthearted strips for my young son to read- such as "Terrence Tyler and his Terracotta Top-hat", "Murphy the Disenfranchised Baboon", "Gesticulating Gilbert and his Gullible Gay Grandparents" and "Wilberforce the Aristocratic Donkey-Salesman". However, it was only recently that I discovered just how steamy the seemingly innocent stylings of the cartoon genre can actually become. This is an excellent book to get hold of, if you've ever thought about looking to seal off the figurative ventilation and set about upping those graphical humidity levels! However, while it makes for an excellent starting point, I did find it to be somewhat on the tamer side of erotica. If you're hoping to produce something truly racy, you might find yourself wanting to extrapolate a little beyond the limits of the guide. I know that I most certainly did!

Anyhow, it was a rather interesting experience to put all that I had learned within up for assessment! Despite the levels of praise that I had become accustomed to (not least for my weekly serial "Androgynous Andrea and her Asinine Feminist Antics"- which was a particular favourite of the Reverend and his wife), I wasn't quite sure how a man of the cloth might take to my more risquè departures. You can probably understand my slight trepidation, especially if I state that the emphasis was not particularly towards the word "comic", but bore down rather more heavily upon the term "strip" (although, believe me, you wouldn't see much of this kind of stuff in any UK strip club- or at least, not a legally licensed one). Sadly, the Reverend was not as impressed by my attempts to break down boundaries (primarily those of taste) as I had hoped! I felt most embarrassed when he pronounced that in his opinion an act of "grossly immoral behaviour" upon my part had left "a significant and gravely troubling stain that had irreversibly permeated the integrity of my character". Of course, I apologised most profusely, but I fear that the good Reverend is now unlikely to be of any future assistance. In fact he made it quite abundantly clear that he does not wish to come into contact with my work "under any conceivable circumstances". Having already reached out to offer my sincere assurance that I would take the time to seal any future embodiments of the character "Selena the Rambunctious F#%*-Dwarf" within protective stain-proof plastic (before permitting myself any opportunities to stop and "admire the quality of my work"), I don't think he's likely to change his mind on this one...
