Product Description

Composer and cellist Ernst Reijseger has written and recorded the soundtrack for Werner Herzog's »Cave Of Forgotten Dreams«. Herzog made a documentary which is a wonderful portrait of the cave art discovered at Chauvet-Pont-d'Arc in France. These paintings are achingly beautiful, and when Herzog's camera glides along the cave walls, accompanied by the music of cellist Ernst Reijseger, it's impossible not to be moved and awed. Reijseger creates enchanting music for choir, organ, piano, flute and cello. The human voices of the Nederlands Kamerkoor, Harmen Fraanje's organ sounds, Sean Bergin's flute and Ernst Reijseger's cello arise to a complex sound painting. His music is a refreshment for the soul, far away from the noise and chaos of a big city. Reijseger has composed music of unearthly beauty for the thirty thousand years old cave paintings and created a new cathedral of sounds. Werner Herzog: The music in this film is extremely important and adds a very strange beautiful different dimension to it. Ernst Reijseger, a great and genius avant-garde cello player and composer."" The film was released in the UK in March 2011 to universal acclaim from the critics. 5.0 out of 5 stars Haunting, beautiful music 31 Jan 2012
Format:MP3 Download|Verified Purchase
Fans of Werner Herzog will already be familiar with the work of Dutch composer and celloist Ernst Reijseger, who also wrote the music for 'The Wild Blue Yonder' (available as an album titled Requiem for a dying planet). Reijseger encapsulates Werner's atmospheres to perfection and the result is this stunning, haunting music which will take you back into the dark recesses of Chauvet Cave right from the first notes. Every track merges seamlessly into the next; however, for me, the most beautiful piece is the - rather unfortunately named - 'Gaga', in which human voices provide the rhythm, almost a heartbeat to the main melody. I clearly remember watching the film in 3D at the cinema, and feeling as if I could almost touch the paintings, accompanied by the almost tribal sound of this track. It's absolutely moving and utterly beautiful. If you loved the film 'Cave of The Forgotten Dreams', you will love this album.

5.0 out of 5 stars Earth Music 5 Oct 2011
Format:Audio CD
The perfect aural accompaniment to Werner Herzog's movie of the same name. Music from deep in the earth and deep in time. Powerful and mysterious. If you enjoyed the film, you will surely enjoy this return trip to the incredible Chauvet Cave. And...has anyone noticed...Reijseger and Herzog could be twin brothers! A match made in movie/music heaven.

5.0 out of 5 stars Lovely stuff 28 Mar 2012

I first heard this, like many do, watching the documentary. The content of the documentary was, of course, fascinating and amazing. But the music is really incredible irrespective of the content.
I also watched the extras on the DVD about the music. You get a chance to see more about how and where it was recorded.
But the audio CD is top quality and just a pleasure to listen to.
Not being a music expert all I can add is that if one had to represent thousands of years of human art, culture, and discovery into a musical form, this Dutch composer and musician has done it and done it in a way that is contemporary, ancient, and spiritual. You can tell he really loves what he does too.
The packaging of the CD is also interesting for the materials/cover stock used. More like a book.
See the movie. If you like the music, buy the CD for sure. You will not be disappointed.

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful album 9 May 2012

After watching the documentary, "Cave Of Forgotten Dreams," I had to find out who composed this soundtrack, and I bought as soon as I was able. I enjoyed the music more than the film itself. The composition, performance, and production are dark, poignant, and stunning - almost otherworldly in some ways. The use of voices and various instruments is very purposeful and effective in communicating the emotions of the different pieces. The cellist on the soundtrack is fantastic, as well. I highly recommend this album if you enjoy creative and unique instrumental music.

5.0 out of 5 stars Awesome Haunting Music - in the true sense of Awe. 17 Jan 2013

While viewing the Werner Herzog documentary, "The Cave of Forgotten Dreams", my husband and I were quite taken with the musical soundtrack. So much so, that I went online during a commercial and purchased it in 30 seconds using my 1-click checkout on Amazon. Chauvet Cave, located in the South of France, was discovered by two cavers in recent history. Herzog and his team were given exclusive access to this 32,000 year old site of the oldest known cave paintings. The sophisticated artistry and 3D effects of these images were astonishing.

The soundtrack, composed by Ernst Reigseger, is at times haunting, lush, spare and sacred choir. The music is in such syncopation to the on-screen images, that it feels fluid and complete. I am not familiar with Mr. Reigseger's work, but am much captivated by this one.

5.0 out of 5 stars Soul Music 3 Sep 2013
By Bonnie H. Tarrant - Published on

This music truly comes from the soul as also does the art work of these early ancestors of mankind from so long ago. The film and the music left me spellbound and crying. These early people must have felt and known things that we have somehow lost along the way. I ordered this CD as soon as I could get the information about it. My hat's off to you Mr. Reijseger for this beautiful music to go with this amazing film. I am so happy I was able to find it through Amazon. Thank you, Bonnie Tarrant
