4.0 out of 5 stars John R, Ernie's record mart 10 Jan 2008

This brings back memories of yesterday when about all you could get on the am radio at night was WLAC. I rated this a 4 instead of 5 because I would like to hear more clips from John R. I used to have some cassettes put out by the man himself (John Richbourg), but lost them long ago. These had great music, but also were shows including the commercials with a lot of dialogue from John R. Remember the baby chicks, Royal Crown and all the great "blue plate specials" of 45's.

Listened to WLAC as a kid with my transistor radio ear phones in my ear way past midnight. John R, Hoss Allen, Big Hugh Baby man those cats were so hip. Played that good stuff that you couldn't hear anywhere else. If you listened to them back in the day this CD will bring back memories. Nothing on here made the top 40 and most artists you probably have not heard of unless you are a R&B fan of the earlier music and it's roots. It's just a very good CD of artists that recorded for Excello records and Ernie's Record Mart included them in their package of weekly specials. If you want to trip down memory lane and see how way down south in Dixie served it's R&B before Allan Freed and Wolfman Jack arrived, here it is.

Any one who listened to WLAC in the 50's and 60's needs to have this. It showcases artists who definitely weren't heard on mainstream radio, (especially in Nashville). I would have like to have heard more spoken intros and commercials, but what the hey....

Love the idea of being able to retrieve history by shopping! Used to listen to WLAC Nashville late at night and enjoying the music and equally happy to do it again. This recording of John R's show and it's sponsor Ernie's Record Mart makes me want start looking again for that type nocturnal escape.
