This is a large format illustrated biography and when I initially got it I was disappointed, suspecting that it would be heavy on photos and documents and light on reading but I'm happy to have been proved wrong.

There are lots of photos and documents, each with blocks of supporting sentences or paragraphs, there's an excellent contents page, supporting notes, a list of organisations devoted to Eric Fromm, a select index of writings by Fromm, a chronology of important dates in the life of Erich Fromm and an index of names.

The chapter headings set the course of the narrative really well, beginning with the background of tradition, family and childhood; the second chapter deals with Fromm's questioning adolescence and is entitled "How Is This Possible?" (a reference to an Fromm's view of a family friend whose attachment to her father provoked her suicide when her father passed away, an episode with a profound impact on Fromm which he mentions in his semi-biographical Beyond The Chains of Illusion), chapter three charts his journey from Talmudic Studies to Psycho-Analysis; the fourth chapter deals with Fromm's struggle to define his own thinking; the fifth his forming of a new identity; chapter six deals with The Art of Loving and the reality of the Destructive Urge, some of the books for which Fromm was popularly recognised and remembered; finally the concluding chapter deals with The Wisdom of Old Age.

The pace and writing style of the book is very engaging and interesting and would make for easy reading whether you're a firm fan or new to Eric Fromm altogether.

All in all I found that the book provided a lot of insight into the life and ideas of someone who was surely one of the most, if not the most, clear sighted of the humanistic psychologists.

An intimate look at Fromm 25 July 2007
By Dean Sayers - Published on
Format: Paperback
I have loved the works of Erich Fromm since I was a sophomore in high school. His impact is immense, though his relevancy has been belittled by the Frankfurt School (omitting his contributions - and his development of the basics - of their major theories).

When I heard of an Erich Fromm biography written by his long - time companion, Rainer Funk, I was excited. I bought the book as soon as I could, and I was very pleased with it.

It has a lot of photos of and relating to Fromm that are hard to find, and give an intimate look into his life and ideas - not just what his ideas were, but why he thought them. Fromm's semi-autobiographical work, "Beyond the Chains of Illusion" offer a bit of insight into his life, but it is interesting to see the characters actually given faces.

This book is great for anyone interested in Fromm, whose humanism is hard to surpass. It explains in the way only Funk could what Fromm's life was like.

Wonderful book 12 May 2007
By Thomas B. Kirsch - Published on
Format: Paperback Verified Purchase
This book is an illustrated biography of one of the most well known psychologists of the 20th century. Fromm had a varied career and his fame spread far beyond the confines of traditional psychoanalysis and sociology. This biography, written by his literary executor, Dr. Rainer Funk, outlines the life and work of Erich Fromm in a good way.
