Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

The album that launched Clapton's solo career takes most of its cues from his then-recent collaboration with Delaney and Bonnie. In fact, Delaney produced the album, which explains its loose, jam-session feel that sometimes finds Clapton battling against a cast that includes guest stars Stephen Stills, Sonny Curtis, Rita Coolidge, Leon Russell, and Delaney and Bonnie. Yet this is the album on which Clapton established himself as a forceful singer, and it also produced some of his most enduring classics, including "Blues Power", "After Midnight", and "Let It Rain". --Daniel Durchholz

I can't believe "August" and "Behind The Sun" are selling better than this one...

Eric Clapton is surrounded by a cornucopia of musicians and vocalist on this his first solo album.
Delaney and Bonnie Bramlett, Stephen Stills, Rita Coolidge, Bobby Whitlock, Jim Goron, Carl Radle, Leon Russell and several more lend a hand or two, and Clapton has co-written about half of the album's eleven songs with Bonnie Bramlett, the half-decent instrumental "Slunky" and the fine blues-rock numbers "Bad Boy" and "Bottle Of Red Wine" among them.

There is perhaps a little less pop-rock and a little more blues-rock here than on most of Clapton's seventies solo albums, and many of the songs that were to become concert standarts throughout the decade came from this album: J.J. Cale's "After Midnight", the rockers "Blues Power" and "Bottle Of Red Wine" and the grand "Let It Rain".

"Eric Clapton" is a fine debut, and while it is certainly not among Clapton's best-known solo albums, it is actually among the best, sporting good melodies and showcasing excellent musicianship.

This is a great album that launched Clapton's career as a solo artist. Following stints in John Mayall's Blues Breakers, Cream and Blind Faith, Clapton had proved himself over and over again to be a great guitarist. In those bands he had been working with great talent, which had driven him to new heights in order to compete with them. Here however, he is driving himself to make a mark as a soloist, and so hitting similar heights. In later albums, once he was established, he'd become a bit lazy and bland, but here he is on fire and out to show the world what he can do by himself.

For the first time we get Clapton the singer as well as Clapton the guitarist, and while his voice isn't perfect, it's still pretty good, sensitive where it needs to be and powerful enough to keep up with his guitar. It's the guitar that is the star of the show though, and on this well chosen set of bluesy tunes it really shines through. The opener, Slunky, is a rocking instrumental workout that is probably my favourite track on the album. I also love the JJ Cale cover `After Midnight' and the album closer, Let it Rain. The rest of the album is uniformly good as Clapton works his way through fast and slow blues numbers.

A great start to his solo career, back in the days when he still had the fire and drive to be the best he could be. A five star album.

Eric Clapton has probably been involved in more 'debut' albums than anyone else, being in Yardbirds, Bluesbreakers, Cream, Blind Faith, Derek And The Dominoes and then officially solo. Eric is clearly stoned/wasted on the album cover and it looks like his Strat is propping him up in the chair!. At this point in his career Clapton was playing some of his best guitar as shown on the majestic 'Layla' album. This is a nice little companion to that album and the appropriately titled 'slunky' kicks off the album as though the tape operator has just started recording mid way through a jam session, Bobby Keys pre Brown Sugar on sax. Quality. 'After Midnight' still gets a bit of radio play today and is probably the most well known track on the album. Why is he SO bad these days?, apart from the blues albums he hasn't made a truly great solo album for years. This is some prime era Slowhand, even if the material is a bit uneven, great playing from all involved.
