EREMITA is without the shadow of a doubt Ihsahn's most ambitious work to date. He continues to prove his evolution as a musician and artist on a release that will surely turn some heads in the world of not only metal, but even avant-garde music. With unorthodox instrumentation and his impeccable sense for composition Ihsahn lets the listener in on a strange journey of both insanity and beauty.

As a fan of both Ihsahn's earlier band, Emperor, as well as his solo career I enjoyed EREMITA a lot. Is it my favorite release by him? I can't tell yet, but it certainly has the potential.

If you're a fan of Ihsahn's previous solo efforts (The Adversary, angL, After) then EREMITA is an obvious must buy for you. It will give you everything from those albums and even more. However, if you're more of an Empreror fan who never really got into his solo endeavors I can't recommend this as warmly. If you didn't enjoy his previous three albums, chances are you're going to feel the same about this record, despite the fact that it does boast a few Emperor moments.

All in all, EREMITA is a breath-taking effort and it's definitely worth checking out if you enjoy advanced, intelligent and honest music. Ihsahn isn't your common metal musician. He is probably one of the most prominent composers of modern music today.

I love Ihsahns previous releases and his endeavors in Emperor, but this has to be his best work to date. A amazing blend of Avant, Jazz, Black Metal and Prog, this innovative album pushes the boundaries of music in general.
The use of guest musicians on this album keeps it fresh, the drums are by Tobias Ornes and the epic squealing sax by Jorgen Munkeby (all hail Shining Nor), which is on many of the tracks and just makes everything more epic and bring on this almost improvised jazz feel. There is guitar solo by Jeff Loomis on 'The Eagle and the Snake', clean vocals by Devin Townsend on 'Introspection', Female vocals on 'Departure' by Heidi S. Tveitan and clean vocals by Einar Solberg on 'Arrival'.
With tracks such as 'The Paranoid' nodding to Emperor's frantic black metal past, its impressive to see Ihsahns progression. I look foreword to his upcoming album 'Das Seelenbrechen', buy this if you love experimental or progressive metal. Especially if you are trying to get into the genre or black metal.

If you are a fan of Emperor, then you have probably heard Ihsahn's previous solo albums and know they are much more musically open and freely creative than his work with Emperor. If you are a fan of the progressive rock element of post black metal then Ihsahn is definitely worth a try. This is the fourth installment of his solo work and follows on nicely from After (the third album). It still features saxophone on one or two of the tracks but has a much harder, heavier feel than After, so is more reminiscent of Angl. Well worth trying!
